Writing Box (Suzuribako) with Chrysanthemum and Plum, late 1800s-early 1900s. Sasaki Takayasu (Japanese, 1845-1929). Lacquer over wood with gold and silver sprinkled powder (maki-e); Both functional and elegant, this is a container for an ink stone, brushes, and ink from a set of writing tools that included a larger box for paper. Against a sleek gold lacquered ground, its artist has used restraint in sprinkled powder decoration (maki-e) to produce the design of cockscomb and harvested rice on the interior of the lid.

Writing Box (Suzuribako) with Pine, Camellia, and Bamboo, 1400s. Japan, Muromachi period (1392-1573). Lacquer on wood with decoration in maki-e; overall: 24.2 x 22.6 cm (9 1/2 x 8 7/8 in.). Writing boxes were indispensible personal possessions for the literate of medieval Japan. Beyond containing the tools for artistic expression and communication such as an ink stone, writing brushes, and a water dropper, writing boxes often featured scenes from classical literature or symbolic motifs rendered in a wide array of complex lacquer techniques.

Two tea caddies and a mixing caddy. During the 18th century tea caddy sets consisted of three elements: two caddies for different kinds of tea and one for the owners personal blend. The Leiden silversmith who created this miniature set specialized in large silver items. He constructed the miniature caddies, using rectangular pieces of silver plate, in the same way he did those of larger format.

Writing box. The bodhisattva of compassion (Kannon) is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe on the lid.The quality of the lacquer technique here is exceptional. After the decoration was applied it was covered with lacquer and then carefully polished until the motif reappeared. This produced an image, which, like a brush painting, is completely flat.
