Dril-bu. Culture: Tibetan. Dimensions: H.: 20.3 cm (8 in.); Diam.; 9.5 cm (3-3/4 in.). Date: late 19th century. The dril-bu (bell) along with the dorje (scepter) are indispensable liturgical instruments used during Buddhist ritual recitation. They are usually regarded as one object, are matched and used together. The bell is held in the left hand and the scepter in the right as both hands gracefully move in prescribed gestures that serve as a commentary to the recitation. As a pair, they reflect the two aspects of Buddhist practice: method and wisdom, intuition and compassion. The prongs emerging from the bell's handle have their roots in Indic mythology and recall the thunderbolt scepter of Indra, a Hindu warrior god who governs rain, clouds and lightning. Small dorjes appear at the bell's rim. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Ceremonial Arrowhead (Yanone) dated 1645 Umetada Motoshige Japanese Large arrowheads, pierced and elaborately chiseled with landscapes, birds, flowers, dragons, and Buddhist divinities, were created to be admired for the beauty of their metalwork and design rather than for use in archery. This arrowhead is dated 1645 and signed by Umetada Motoshige (died 1675), a member of the Umetada school of swordsmiths, tsuba makers, and iron chiselers. It belongs to a group of more than thirty similarly signed and dated pieces in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (including acc. nos. 32.75.318, .321, .327, .330, .334, .337, .340, .398-.399, .403, .406, .409) that may have been made for presentation or as a votive offering to a shrine.. Chessmen (32) ca. 1870-80 French, Dieppe The shapes of the pieces are identical on the two sides, except for the kings and queens. The workmanship of the rooks and pawns is especially fine. The bishops, as is customary in French sets, are "fous" (idiots or fools), wearing jester's cap and belled collar. The white king may be meant to represent King Ferdinand of Spain, which would support the theory that this set represents the reconquest of Spain from the Moors, and was intended for the Spanish market.. Pedestal from the drawing room of the William H. Vanderbilt House 1879-82 Herter Brothers Herter Brothers, the leading cabinetmaking, design, and decorating firm during the second half of the nineteenth century, created a pair (2002.298.1-.2) of opulent pedestals for their most prestigious commission, the grand Fifth Avenue residence of William H. Vanderbilt. Each pedstal is a column carved with ribbons and "jewel"-encrusted garlands. Ormolu capitals incorporate classical female masks and birds' heads; decorative mounts feature stylized foliate patterns. They were intended as an integral part of the ornate decoration of Vanderbilt's drawing room, described in 1883-84, shortly after its completion, as "gorgeous in the extreme: everything sparkles and flashes with gold and colorwith mother-of-pearl, with marbles, with jewel-effects in glassand almost every surface is covered, one might say weighted, with ornament." Girandoles c 1848-1851 Philadelphia. Gilt girandoles adorned countless parlor mantelpieces and tables in mid-19th century American homes. These particular girandoles refer to James Fenimore Cooperís Last of the Mohicans, which tells the tragic story of the Mohawks and their attempt to rescue a young white woman abducted by a renegade Huron. The central candelabra shows Chief Chingachgook seated on a log, next to Natty Bumppo, whom he raised to manhood. Behind them stands Chingachgookís son, Unicas. These three, along with Major Duncan Heyward, seen at the right, set out to free the abducted Cora Munro, at the left.. Gilt bronze, marble, glass . Cornelius and Company (Manufacturer)

Maker: Tiffany Studios (1902-32). Date: 1904-15.Tiffany's love of nature can be seen in many of his leaded-glass windows and lampshades that depict adaptations of flowers.
