Writing Box (Suzuribako) with "The Lady of the Bridge" Design. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 1 in. (2.5 cm); W. 5 5/8 in. (14.3 cm); L. 6 1/8 in. (15.6 cm). Date: 18th century.The design on the exterior of the lid is a reference to Hashi-hime, or "The Lady of the Bridge," a woman who spends her nights waiting for her lover and who came to be associated most often with the bridges of Uji (south of Kyoto). She is also featured in The Tale of Genji.
