Fan 1860-70 probably French The imagery is very expressive of the romantic fantasy and erotic undertones that is inherent in fan leaves of the Victorian era. On the obverse are groups of women in Western fashion, in well to do and structured surroundings, exchanging love messages from suitors presumably far away. On the reverse is a romanticized Indian or European maiden wearing filmy garments with an American Indian in unchaperoned surroundings, the setting and the tepees in the background representing a much simpler and less restrictive life; fans were used for flirting and it seems that the scene on the reverse would be a possible message to a suitor. Fan. Culture: probably French. Date: 1870-90.The Victorians were adept at making copies of 18th century fans which are sometimes difficult to differentiate from the originals. One of several clues is in the treatment of the hair, which in the origial fans is a powdered gray rather than natural or whiter hues, as illustrated here. Folding range with the presentation of the meeting between Ruth and Boas during the corn harvest, c. 1780 - c. 1795 Folding range with paper leaf on which with watercolor and gold paint centrally a representation of the meeting between Ruth and Boas during the choir harvest, flanked by cartouches with fruits, inlaid on an open frame of sliced leg with silver and gold. In the central, Goudomrande Cartouche, Ruth looks surprised at Boas, the owner of the Korenveld, who 'caught' her when harvesting. On the second plan there is another woman and a boy's corn sheaf stacks on a cart on the right. This is flanked by small oval medallions in which a classic vase and larger windows filled with grapes, apples, pears, peaches and melon. The whole is equipped with flower garlands. On the back of the leaf in the middle a leaf and floral motif. The fourteen leg frame has a central cartouche with a arrow case flanked by medallions with flowers. England is represented by the placid cow and the recumbent lion, tamed and controlled by the Dutch, the Spanish, and the French. At center, a group of men saw off the horns of a cow (Great Britain) while another milks her. At left, a man amputates the right paw of the British lion while another treads on the beasts back. Two Englishmen lament the scene and drop the deed of separation. Brisé fan first quarter 18th century probably French Fans such as this are known as "Vernis Martin" because the Martin family developed a varnish for furnishing objects in the early 18th century and became known for that invention. Varnish was subsequently used on European-made fans to imitate Chinese lacquer. As there is no documentation that the Martin family ever made fans, the association with the family may be unfounded.. The scene in the middle of this fan is derived from an English print of 1792. The woman depicted to either side seem to have been inspired by English fashion magazines.

Folding rough (souvenir range) with leaf of goat leather, which is divided with gouache at the front in three fields with the Colosseum, central, oval medallion in the Colosseum, on the left in a round locket in a white field. Caracalla thermal baths and right in a ditto Medallion and field, the Tomb of Caecilia Metella. For the ornamental part of the impeller, Buti was inspired by the paintings from the Villa Negroni discovered in 1777. The palmet edges above the left and right fields are derived from the rooms C and G. (for the Villa Negroni, H. Parasol. Culture: French. Date: 1860-69.Seen here, is a nice example of a typical carriage parasol of the 1860s. The contrast of colors of the canopy and the lace is very appealing and showcases the lace. Also, the black lace is a nice complement to the rich lustrous ivory. Carriage parasols, taken when riding in an open carriage, were popularized by Queen Victoria in the 1840s and continued to be for several decades afterwards.
