Armorial dish: The story of Apollo. Artist: Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (Italian, Rovigo ca.1487-1542). Dimensions: Diam. 10 1/2 in. (26.6 cm). Date: 1532.This splendid plate formed part of one of the largest majolica services ever made, commissioned by Piero Maria Pucci (1467-1547) of Florence, whose arms are visible at the center. Highly distinguished in the first half of the sixteenth century, Pucci family members served under the Medici popes Leo X (r. 1513-21) and Clement VII (r. 1523-34). Thirty-seven pieces from the maiolica service survive (including four in the Lehman Collection: see also 1975.1.1131; 1975.1.1134; 1975.1.1135), all painted in Urbino by the celebrated maiolica painter Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo in 1532 and 1533. Some pieces were sent to Gubbio to be completed with luster decoration under Xanto's direction. Dish with warrior China The dramatic warrior with two axes depicted in the center of this plate illustrates the addition of figures based on popular plays and novels to the repertory of kraak ware, a type of ceramic that was often exported to Europe. This warrior, who cannot be precisely identified, holds axe in his lowered right hand, with a second one in his belt, and may be allusion to Li Gui (also known as the Black Whirlwind), one of the heroes of the classic Ming novel The Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan). The composite groupings of flowers on the panel, on the other hand, reflect the impact of contemporaneous Turkish Iznik wares on the evolution of kraak ware in the early seventeenth century while some of the single blossoms represent tulips, a flower that was first cultivated in Turkey, and eventually spread to Holland as part of the development of global trade, including Chinese porcelains, in the late sixteenth and seventeenth century.. Date: ca. 1520-25.In Renaissance Italy, fine maiolica was often associated with the relaxed yet elegant atmosphere of the country estate, where hospitality was generally overseen by women. This plate belongs to a service commissioned by Eleonora Gonzaga, Duchess of Urbino, as a gift for her mother, Isabella d'Este, Marchioness of Mantua. On all the known pieces, Isabella's arms are joined with those of her husband, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga. The arms are frequently accompanied by mottoes and heraldic or personal badges belonging to Isabella or her husband. Twenty-one pieces of the service survive, all decorated by the greatest maiolica painter of the sixteenth century, Nicola da Urbino. Platter (one of a set) ca. 1745 Doccia Porcelain Manufactory Italian The first factory in Italy to produce hard-paste porcelain was founded in Venice in 1720 by Francesco Vezzi (Italian, 1651-1740), but this enterprise was short-lived and closed in 1727. A far more ambitious and successful hard-paste porcelain factory was established ten years later outside of Florence at Doccia by Carlo Ginori (Italian, 1702- 1757), and it became one of the most significant European factories during the eighteenth century. The Doccia factory, as it is commonly known, continued after Ginoris death and remained under family control until merging with a Milanese firm at the end of the nineteenth century, but Doccias period of greatest artistic innovation took place under Carlo Ginoris directorship from 1737 to 1757.[1Considerable recent scholarship on the Ginori factory has underscored both the political circumstances in Florence at the time the factory was established and the importance of Ginoris
