Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuffboxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace. Gold snuffboxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuffbox, too, had become an important social prop. Snuffbox 1754-55 Noël Hardivillers This gold and enamel snuffbox is an example of the exuberant Rococo motifs that found their way onto a variety of luxury items, including these small cases for holding nasal tobacco that became popular during the eighteenth century. Marked by the goldsmith Noël Hardivillers, the box is decorated on the lid with a charming vignette that features an overturned basket of flowers tied with a blue ribbon, surrounded by S-shaped scrolls and shell motifs engraved into the surrounding surface and heightened with translucent enamel en basse taille, a goldsmith technique that entails engraving or chasing the surface of the metal with a design and then covering it with a layer of translucent enamel, in a similar manner to another snuffbox by Hardivillers in the museum (1976.155.5).Dr. Iris Moon, 2015. Tea service for two people (tête-à-tête). Empress Maria Theresa of Austria presented this tea service to the pastellist Jean Etienne Liotard, who had portrayed her eleven children in Vienna. The service was made in the Viennese porcelain factory, which had been established by Claudius Innocentius du Paquier in 1718; for this enterprise, he had lured workers away from Meissen. Maria Theresa took over the factory in 1744 and renamed it the Kaiserliche Porzellanmanufaktur.

The exterior decorations evoke ancient Roman art and honor the divine sources of creativity. Gods and muses perch beside famous poets atop an elaborate confection of drawers and removable containers, including inkwells and a sand-shaker (for drying fresh text). Date: 1740-70.This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.
