Plate - The Legend of Shooting the Dead Body, 1540-1575. Maiolica, tin glazed and painted earthenware. Attributed to: Giacomo Mancini.. The plate shows a scene from the 'Shooting the Dead Body' tale. A nobleman died in Persia and two different people claimed to be his only son and heir. A judge devised a test to discover which one was the true son. An archery competition was arranged with the body of the dead man as the target. One of the boys shoots and hits the body, whilst the other boy says that he cannot desecrate the body of his father. The second boy is announced as the rightful heir.

Plate with the Arms of Blanche of Navarre 1427-38 Spanish The prolific workshops of Manises, near the city of Valencia, made colorfully decorated tin-glazed earthenware vessels in many shapes. Such wares were widely appreciated across Europe, but Italians appear to have been the biggest customers for them. This plate, which bears the prominent arms of Queen Blanche of Navarre (1391-1441) and her husband, John II of Aragon, was probably part of a larger service. In a letter of 1454, for example, Maria of Castile, consort of Alfonso V of Aragon, ordered just such a service, including dishes for meat, washing basins, porringers, broth bowls, pitchers, vases, and other objects to be "lustered inside and out." Plate (from the "Vues Diverses" service) 1814 Sèvres Manufactory French The painted scene illustrates a combat near the ruined tombs of Baalbek in the mountains of Syria. The scene was adapted by Le Bel from a drawing by the peripatetic Louis-Francois Cassas (1756-1827), whose travels took him from northern Europe to Istria, Constantinople, Asia Minor, and Egypt. Cassas spent nearly a month in Baalbek in 1785, and his views were etched and engraved for his "Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie," published in 1799. Our plate comes from a set of "vues diverses "and is one of only two in the series to depict a scene outside France. Tray (one of a set) 1745-47 Doccia Porcelain Manufactory The first factory in Italy to produce hard-paste porcelain was founded in Venice in 1720 by Francesco Vezzi (Italian, 1651-1740), but this enterprise was short-lived and closed in 1727. A far more ambitious and successful hard-paste porcelain factory was established ten years later outside of Florence at Doccia by Carlo Ginori (Italian, 1702- 1757), and it became one of the most significant European factories during the eighteenth century.
