Moon flask ca. 1878-82 Designed by Henry Slater This vase is of the oriental moon-flask form, but with spheroid rather than flattened sides. It is printed on both sides in underglaze blue with Doulton's spray design and overlaid, on one side, with the willow-pattern plate design and, on the other, with a cluster of exotic fruit. These motifs are set asymmetrically upon the surfaces in the Japanese manner of dynamic interplay between occupied and empty space. The blue decoration was transfer printed, and stencils cut with the same patterns were used for the gilt ornament. Around the cylindrical neck we see in gold the same fruit as appear on one side in blue, and the border around the willow-pattern plate design is echoed in gilt on the raised strap that demarcates the boundaries of the two sides. Baluster-shaped vase (part of a five-piece garniture) ca. 1690-1720 Japanese, for export market (Hizen ware, Imari type) Japanese porcelain vases made for export were avidly sought by aristocratic and royal patrons to decorate their stately homes and palaces in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. While Chinese porcelains were exported to Europe and Britain in larger quantities during this period, Japanese porcelains were prized for their boldly patterned and richly-colored decoration. Moon Flask, early 18th century, 9 3/8 x 7 5/8 x 3 15/16 in. (23.81 x 19.37 x 10 cm), Porcelain with underglaze blue decor, China, 18th century, Paintings were a major source for the decoration on Ming and Ch'ing porcelain. The potters at Ching-te-chen, where this unusual vessel was produced, often interpreted porcelain from an earlier period freely and inventively. While the shape of this flask is drawn directly from early fifteenth century porcelain prototypes, the pictorial decoration of women in a garden setting, however, would not have been found on the earlier versions. The flattened, footed shape seen here is ultimately derived from Islamic vessels and the inclusion of the auspicious motifs of a phoenix and carp (one on each side of the flask) indicates the ladies were in the process of receiving good news.
