Personnel with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) break soil during a recovery mission in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Jan. 31, 2023. Once the soil is broken up, its transferred to a screening station to look for possible aircraft parts or osseous material. Each recovery mission can involve up to 65 U.S. personnel plus Lao counterparts. Both countries work together on investigations and excavations throughout the country between 30 - 45 days per-mission. Recovered remains believed to be those of Americans are transferred to DPAAs laboratory in Hawaii for further analysis and identification by forensic anthropologists.Since 1985 the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for American service members. There are still 286 missing Americans in Laos from the Vietnam War.

Excavation of the Terracotta Guardian Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, near Xian (Sian), China. Qin Shi Huang was king of the Chinese State of Qin from 247 BCE to 221 BCE and became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BCE, ruling until his death in 210 BCE. He was buried in his mausoleum with a terracotta army of over 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots, 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. They were intended to help Qin Shi rule another empire in the afterlife. The army was discovered in 1974 by local farmers who were drilling for water. The place is now a major archaeological site and tourist attraction.
