The Burial of Christ 1595 Annibale Carracci Italian This deeply moving picture was painted for one of Carraccis patrons, Astorre di Vincenzo Sampieri, a canon of the cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna. Intended as a gift for an important figure in Rome, it was retained by Sampieri, who sent a copy of it by Guido Reni instead. We view the dramatic event from within the burial chamber, the figures lit by torch; through an opening the holy women can be seen against a dawn-lit landscape. The picture was much admired. The Glorification of the Giustiniani Family 1783 Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo Italian This oil sketch is a precious record of a ceiling in Genoas ducal palace that was destroyed in the 1860s. Tiepolos composition can be compared with his fathers ceiling design for Würzburg, which Domenico helped to execute (see the oil sketch for that painting nearby). The younger Tiepolo depicted a Giustiniani family patriarch, Jacopo, at the top of a staircase, kneeling before a personification of the Ligurian Republic. At left is a female personification of the Aegean island of Chios, which the Giustiniani family ruled for two centuries.
