Christ Carrying the Cross ca. 1684 Pierre Mignard French After first training with the mannerist painter Jean Boucher de Bourges at the age of twelve, Pierre Mignard entered Vouets studio in Paris in 1630, where he would stay until 1634, before leaving for Rome the year after. In a sojourn that lasted over twenty years, Mignard studied the works of the masters of the High Renaissance and the Carracci school and developed his natural facility for portraiture. In the second half of the 17th century, he would become one of the most significant protagonists of classicism in France, his elegantly crafted history paintings reflecting the influence of his extended stay in Italy. After engaging for decades in a fierce rivalry with Charles Le Brun, the death in 1683 of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Le Bruns backer, cleared the way for Mignard to receive royal commissions. Amya Petitioning Faustus for the Custody of Saint Mamas ca. 1543 Jean Cousin the Elder French This recently discovered sheet is a rare work by Jean Cousin the Elder, one of the most central and appealing artists of the French Renaissance. He was active as a designer of tapestry, stained glass, and book illustration, as well as ephemeral festival decorations for the French court. Nonetheless, Cousins oeuvre has proven difficult to reconstruct as the majority of his designs were ultimately executed by skilled artisans in other media.This is one of a small number of unassailably autograph sheets by his hand. It is connected to a set of eight tapestries illustrating the life of St. Mamas—of which three survive today-- commissioned in 1543 for the cathedral in Langres. Saint Mamas was an obscure child martyr who lived in Capadoccia in the second century. He was born in prison to a father who died just before his birth and a mother who died just after. The Virgin Protectress of the City of Siena 1588 Francesco Vanni Italian Vanni studied painting briefly in Rome, but, before his twentieth birthday, he was back home in Siena, where he pursued a long career as a painter of altarpieces and decorations for public buildings. In this brisk and luminous sketch, the Virgin appears in glory, her right hand raised in benediction, while Saint Bernardino and Saint Catherine of Siena intercede for their fellow citizens. Toward the lower border of the composition appears a view of the skyline of Siena, easily identified by the silhouettes of the Torre del Mangia, the dome and bell tower of the Cathedral. The right border of the nearly square composition is indicated by a vertical framing line, at the right of which are sketches for heraldic devices. A squared study in pen and brown ink with wash for this same composition was in the collection of Sir John Pope Hennessy, New York (Courtauld photograph B66/229). Triumph of Caesar: Soldiers carrying Trophies ca. 1490 School of Andrea Mantegna Italian Full of rich tonal contrasts and expressive vigor, this engraving reproduces a famous scene from The Triumphs of Caesar, a series of nine canvases painted by Mantegna between 1500 and 1507 for the Gonzaga family in Mantua (now in the Royal Collection, Hampton Court Palace). The Corselet Bearers, the sixth scene in Mantegnas Triumphs, represents a procession of men and boys in classical dress bearing the spoils of victory—coins, plates, and trophies of royal armor. The highly descriptive manner of the figures and the reference to Roman frieze sculpture characterize the style of Mantegna, who was the major innovator in the history of the early Italian Renaissance print.
