The 1906 caption reads: DEATH OF PAUL I.Paul I., Czar of Russia in Napoleon's early days of triumph, was half insane, and so wavering in his attitude toward France that his subjects were in despair. The leading men of the empire went one night to his bedroom to persuade him to abdicate in favor of his son Alexander. Just what happened at that interview the public may never know; but Paul became violent, there was a struggle, the lights went out, and when they were relit the Czar lay upon the floor strangled to death 1801.
