Date: 1789.This oil sketch for a ceiling in a room of Palazzo Gnudi Scagliarini in Bologna takes its subject from the great Greek playwright Euripides (ca. 480-406 BC). Agamemnon's daughter is about to be sacrificed to appease the goddess Diana, who at the climactic moment appears and substitutes a deer on the altar. A flying putto stays the hand of the priest while the warrior Achilles, who had attempted to intervene, lies on the ground, astonished at the turn of events. In depicting this story from the Metamorphoses, the famous book by the Roman poet Ovid, Verkolje demonstrates his knowledge of Classical literature. Moreover, he proves his artistic virtuosity by means of the complex composition with numerous figures.

The Sacrifice of Polyxena Giovanni Francesco Romanelli Italian Polyxena was the youngest daughter of Priam, King of Troy. According to a Greek tragedy by Euripides (ca. 480-406 B.C.), she was sacrificed on an altar over the grave of Achilles, whose death she had caused. Romanelli was a prominent painter in Rome and one of the most successful pupils of Pietro da Cortona. This painting is part of a series of classically inspired canvases depicting Ulysses, Cleopatra, Venus, and Polyxena. They were created for Lorenzo Chigi, Marquess of Montoro. The Judgment of Solomon 1640s Leonaert Bramer Dutch In a dream God granted King Solomon "a wise and an understanding heart," which the turbaned potentate made use of the following day. Two women each claimed an infant as their own, so Solomon ordered it cut in two. One of the women cried out that she would give up the child, thus revealing herself as the true mother. The Entombment 1554 Moretto da Brescia (Alessandro Bonvicino) Italian Conceived as a meditation on mortality, this altarpiece was painted just before Morettos death for the oratory of a confraternity in his hometown. Key to its message of loss and hope is the striking contrast between the somber faces of the figures and the dawn light playing across the sky and landscape. Members of the group would have meditated on the moments following Christs death and thought of the piercing grief of his mother and other attendants, but also of the promise of life to come. While most artists chose to depict the beheading, Gionima picked the moment when the two first meet. Pretending to desert her people, the rich and beautiful widow Judith has just sneaked into the enemy camp with her maid. Holofernes is instantly enamored of her. The composition focuses on the ravishing figure of Judith, brightly lit and clothed in vibrant colors, while Holofernes has a supporting role.
