The Money Diggers John Quidor (American, 1801-1881). The Money Diggers, 1832. Oil on canvas, 15 15/16 x 20 15/16 in. (40.5 x 53.2 cm). Early ethnic stereotypes animate this painting based on one of the American author Washington Irvings raucous stories of life in colonial New York. In this scene from “The Adventure of the Black Fisherman,” three money-mad characters hunt for treasure supposed to have been buried in a Dutch New York cemetery at the time of the British takeover. In painting the miserly Dutchman, the sinister German sorcerer, and the superstitious black fisherman who led the group to the spot, John Quidor followed Irvings descriptions exactly, down to the green lenses in Dr. Knipperhausens glasses. Allegorical Figure Representing Africa Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo Italian This work is part of a series of the allegorical representations of the Four Continents that originally served as overdoors. Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo based his figure of Africa on symbols codified in Cesare Ripas Iconologia (1593): an elephant trunk headdress and vase. Like representations of saints or other figures that artists aimed to identify, these attributes were important signals to historical audiences, though in the case of the Four Continents, they eventually fed into racialized stereotypes. Like the other large-scale allegorical frescoes in this gallery, this panel was probably detached around 1900 from the Palazzo Valle Marchesini Sala in Vicenza.. The Grotto of the Agony (La Grotte de l'agonie) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Grotto of the Agony (La Grotte de l'agonie), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on dark brown wove paper, Image: 11 1/16 x 14 7/16 in. (28.1 x 36.7 cm). Following the Last Supper, Jesus and the apostles retreat to Gethsemane (an olive grove) on the Mount of Olives. While his disciples rest, Christ prays alone, asking God if it is possible to let his sufferings pass him by, yet reaffirming his commitment to submit to Gods will. Luke writes that an angel comes to strengthen him, though in his anguish Jesus sweats blood, a graphic detail that, unusually, Tissot omits. While Lukes account says that Christ receives comfort from the angel, Tissots image seems to promise little solace and, indeed, is profoundly different in tone from the earlier watercolor The Angels Came and Ministered to Him. While one angel holds a chalice—the cup of Jesus suffering—the others proffer globes with scenes of th

Pan and Syrinx. The eternally lustful god of the woods and fields, Pan, has his sights set on the chaste nymph Syrinx, a follower of the goddess Diana. When Syrinxs escape is blocked by a river and Pan is about to overpower her, she is transformed into tall reeds. Pan made a set of pipes from them. Van Everdingen placed all of the emphasis on the fleeing Syrinx; Pan can hardly be detected in the dark forest.
