Allegory on the Abdication of Emperor Charles V in Brussels. Charles V is enthroned at centre. Battle weary and wracked by illness, in 1555 he divided up his empire. He gave his brother Ferdinand (left of the throne) the Holy Roman Empire, while his son Phillip (at the right) became King of Spain and Lord of the Netherlands. The four figures in the right foreground personify the continents over which Charless vast empire stretched.Neptune (left) symbolizes his power at sea.

The Abduction of the Sabine Women probably 1633-34 Nicolas Poussin French According to Roman mythology, the neighboring Sabines were invited to a festival with the intention of forcibly retaining their young women as wives. When the Roman leader Romulus raised his cloak, his warriors seized the women. This dramatic story gave Poussin the opportunity to display his command of gesture and pose and his knowledge of ancient sculpture and architecture. The man at the right wears a yellow lorica made of leather. The painting belonged to the maréchal de Créquy, who was the French ambassador to Rome from June 1633 to July 1634, and then to Cardinal Richelieu. Moeyaerts early style was simple and often rather stiff, and his subjects were primarily history paintings with biblical or mythological narratives. After Rembrandts arrival in Amsterdam, Moeyaerts style became far livelier, his colors more vivid, and his figures more animated. Christ with the Centurion is somewhat transitional in style and was executed in 1632, the year Rembrandt arrived in Amsterdam.

Armida Encounters the Sleeping Rinaldo 1742-1745 Italy. Giovanni Battista Tiepoloís monumental ceiling and wall decorations epitomize the brilliant exuberance of the late Baroque style. Tiepolo enjoyed an international career and was called upon to use his mastery of light, color, and illusion to transform palaces and monasteries in his native Venice and elsewhere in Italy, as well as in Germany and Spain. This painting and three others at the Art Institute, together with smaller decorative panels and a ceiling painting, once graced the cabinet of mirrors, a richly decorated room in the Venetian palace of the powerful Cornaro family. The suite illustrates Torquato Tassoís popular sixteenth-century epic romance Jerusalem Delivered, which is set in the eleventh century, during the First Crusade, when Western knights sought to take Jerusalem from the Muslims. Asia from a set of The Four Continents designed ca. 1786, woven 1790-91 Jean Jacques François Le Barbier French This suite of four tapestries and its coordinating upholstery (MMA 1978.404.4a-c-.18a-c) were commissioned from the Beauvais manufactory in 1786 and woven between 1790 and 1791.¹ As has been noted, "The attractive and not impossible suggestion that the set was intended to be a gift from King Louis XVI to George Washington was made by the first scholar to publish the work.. but it is not supported by any contemporary evidence."² Regardless of whether the suite was intended as a gift to President Washington, the French Revolution intervened, and it is perhaps miraculous that the tapestries were woven at all. By the time they were complete, the French king was in no position to bestow diplomatic gifts on anyone. It is the representation of America as a rather demure-looking young woman that sets this iconographic scheme apart from other groupings of the Four Continents. In the B
