Snake Charmer at Tangier, Africa. Artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, New York 1848-1933 New York). Dimensions: 27 1/2 x 38 1/2 in. (69.9 x 97.8 cm). Date: 1872.The appropriation of an exotic subject was typical of European and American painting in the late 1860s and early 1870s. Tiffany's experiences in North Africa with fellow artist R. Swain Gifford (1804-1905) in summer and fall 1870 most likely informed this composition, which resembles closely that of Jean Leon Gerome's "The Snake Charmer" (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts), and both works may have a common source. The picture's rich palette of earth tones recalls the work of his teacher, tonalist painter George Inness (1825-1894), and reveals Tiffany's keen interest in color and light. The painting was exhibited at Snedecor's Gallery in New York in September 1872 and was later among the orientalist canvases that Tiffany displayed at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.

Study for the Ceiling of the Marquand Music Room ca. 1886 Frederic, Lord Leighton This is a study for the seven-by-twenty-foot ceiling decoration that Leighton painted for the music room in the New York mansion of magnate Henry Marquand. At center is Mnemosyne, the ancient Greek goddess of memory and mother of the muses, the goddesses of creativity. Flanking her are the muse of tragedy and the muse of comedy and idyllic poetry, with embodiments of musical inspiration overhead. The side panels represent the poetry of love and revelry. Leighton depicted the figures with firm outlines against a gold background in order to evoke ancient mosaics. His final canvases were later cut into single-figure works, and this study is the only record of the ceiling ensemble in its entirety.. Study for the Ceiling of the Marquand Music Room. Frederic, Lord Leighton (British, Scarborough 1830-1896 London). ca. 1886. Oil and gold on canvas. Paintings
