Building began in 1489 by an unknown architect; was finished in 1566 by Guidetti. Curious inscriptions on church stones with humorous statements such as "Universita dei Vermicellari" (various artisan corporations). Sebastian Cabot (c. 1474 - 1557), Italian explorer explains his journeys to King Henry VII of England. He was the son of Italian explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Cabot) and his Venetian wife Mattea. After his father's death, Cabot conducted his own voyages of discovery, seeking the Northwest Passage through North America for England. He later sailed for Spain, traveling to South America, where he explored the Rio de la Plata and established two new forts.

Between 1518 and 1519, the Italian master painter Raphael painted 'The Construction of the Temple' (pictured in this line drawing), Solomon's temple in Jerusalem for what is known as the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. According to the hebrew Bible, Solomon was a king of Israel, son of David. His temple on Mount Moriah housed the Ark of the Covenant.
