This painting by Frederic Leighton shows Helen of Troy attended by her handmaidens. In Greek legend, Paris was a Trojan prince, the son of Priam and Hecuba. When Eris, the Greek goddess of discord, was not invited to the marriage of the Greek leader Achilles, she threw a golden apple into the festivities, with the words "for the fairest" written on it. The goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena each claimed the apple, and Zeus, the king of the gods, had Paris choose which one should get it. Hermes, the messenger god, acts as a guide, arranging the meeting between the goddesses and Paris. Aphrodite promised Paris Helen, queen of Sparta, if he picked her, and so he did. The result was the Trojan War as the Greeks fought to Helen to Menelaus, the ruler of Sparta. Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) was a British painter, draughtsman and sculptor. His works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter in an academic style.

Alice, la Belle Pèlerine 1858-59 Sir Edward Burne-Jones In 1856, while studying theology at Oxford, the twenty-three-year-old Burne-Jones toured Gothic cathedrals in France with his friend William Morris, consulted with Dante Gabriel Rossetti in London, and decided to leave college and pursue art. John Ruskin advised him to look closely at Albrecht Dürer, and the present drawing demonstrates the influence of that German master, combined with aspects of Rossettis distinct draftsmanship and vision of female beauty. Thomas Malory's chivalric poem "La Morte DArthur" describes Alice la Belle Pèlerine (Alice the beautiful pilgrim) as "passing fair" and notes that her moniker came courtesy of her father, Duke Ansirus who "was a great pilgrim, for every third year he would be at Jerusalem." An emblematic shell hangs at Alice's neck as she pursues her own quest which is one of the heart. The Two Colleagues (Lawyers) (Les deux confrères Avocats) Honoré Daumier (French, 1808-1879). , 1865-1870. Opaque and transparent watercolor, black ink, and charcoal on wove paper, sheet: 10 × 7 13/16 in. (25.4 × 19.8 cm). The approximately four thousand lithographic caricatures that Honoré Daumier produced were widely circulated in nineteenth-century Paris, where they were appreciated for their sharp satire of contemporary life. A critic of the French monarchy, Daumier often found himself at odds with contemporary censorship laws, serving time in jail in 1832 for ridiculing the French king Charles X. The Legislative Belly, which appeared in the monthly series issued by L’Association Mensuelle, skewers the corrupt conservative members of the Chamber of Deputies, highlighting their bulging stomachs and sneering faces.
