Exploding Milk against Black Background

Straight and meandering thin ridges are periodically found on Mars. Such ridges can form in a variety of ways, as seen in this image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Worden, command module pilot. Note the dark, flat crater floor surrounding the very prominent central mountains. The mountains are in the northeastern corner of the photograph. The other upland area comprises part of the southwestern edge of the crater. While astronauts David R. Scott, commander, and James B. Irwin, lunar module pilot, descended in the Lunar Module (LM) Falcon to explore the moon, astronaut Worden remained with the CSM in lunar orbit.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spies Capri Chasma, located in the eastern portion of the Valles Marineris canyon system, the largest known canyon system in the Solar System.

Osuga Valles lies around 170 kilometers to the south of Eos Chasma, which is at the eastern end of the vast Valles Marineris canyon system as seen by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

This image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows a new impact site originally detected by the Context Camera onboard MRO. The crater is on a dusty slope, which also has several dark slope streaks due to dust avalanches.

The blue region in the center is a relatively cloud-free area where thermal radiation from warmer, deeper levels emerges. Cassini Spacecraft.

The terrain in this observation from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter looks like an ancient uplifted crustal block. The area is riddled with faults (big cracks that allow rocks to slide) and ridges that look like uncovered magma dikes.

ISS009E20447 (27 August 2004) --- This photo of Hurricane Frances was taken by Astronaut Mike Fincke aboard the International Space Station as he flew 230 statute miles above the storm at about 9 a.m. CDT Friday, Aug. 27, 2004. At the time, Frances was located 820 miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean, moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, and Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka are in the fifth month of a six-month flight aboard the Station.

STS093-709-051 (23-27 July 1999) --- The STS-93 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia took this picture of the volcanic island of Manam, along the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea. Manam is one in a string of currently active volcanoes called the Bismarck Arc. It is the most active of the group, having begun its present activity in 1994. The plume of steam and ash streaming from its crater extends more than 20 miles into the atmosphere. When the photo was taken, the shuttle was flying over a point located at 12.2 degrees south latitude and 132.0 degrees east longitude. Data back information on the 70mm film lists time and date of the photo as 05:42:31 GMT, July 25, 1999 (orbit 33).

This image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter covers a steep west-facing slope in southwestern Ganges Chasma, north of the larger canyons of Valles Marineris. The spot was targeted both for the bedrock exposures and to look for active slope processes. We see two distinct flow deposits lobate flows that are relatively bright, sometimes with dark fringes, and very thin brownish lines that resemble recurring slope lineae (or 'RSL'). Both flows emanate from rocky alcoves. The RSL are superimposed on the lobate deposits (perhaps rocky debris flows), so they are younger and more active. The possible role of water in forming the debris flows and RSL are the subjects of continuing debate among scientists. We will acquire more images here to see if the candidate RSL are active.

NASA's Curiosity rover successfully drilled a hole 2 inches (5.1 centimeters) deep in a target called Duluth on May 20, 2018. The hole is about .6 inches (1.6 centimeters) across. It was the first rock sample captured by the drill since October 2016. A mechanical issue took the drill offline in December 2016. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, had to innovate a new way for the rover to drill in order to restore this ability. The new technique, called Feed Extended Drilling (FED) keeps the drill's bit extended out past two stabilizer posts that were originally used to steady the drill against Martian rocks. It lets Curiosity drill using the force of its robotic arm, a little more like a human would while drilling into a wall at home. This image was taken by Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) on Sol 2057. It has been white balanced and contrast-enhanced.

iss060e006368 (July 10, 2019) --- The Namibian port town of Walvis Bay on the Atlantic coast is pictured from 262 miles above as the International Space Station began a southeastern orbital trek across Africa.

Pacific Ring of Fire Expedition. Views of the plume coming out of Brimstone Pit crater near the summit of Northwest Rota-1 volcano. The crater rim is visible in the foreground in images #4 and #5. Burst of rocks and droplets of molten sulfur were intermittently erupted from this crater while the remotely operated vehicle ROPOS was on the edge of the crater.

At any given moment, as many as 10 million wild jets of solar material burst from the suns surface. They erupt as fast as 60 miles per second, and can reach lengths of 6,000 miles before collapsing. These are spicules, and despite their grass-like abundance, scientists didnt understand how they form. Now, for the first time, a computer simulation — so detailed it took a full year to run — shows how spicules form, helping scientists understand how spicules can break free of the suns surface and surge upward so quickly. ISS012-E-21343 (29 Mar. 2006) --- The shadow of the moon falls on Earth as seen from the International Space Station, 230 miles above the planet, during a total solar eclipse at about 4:50 a.m. CST Wednesday, March 29. This digital photo was taken by the Expedition 12 crew, Commander William McArthur and Flight Engineer Valery Tokarev, who are wrapping up a six-month mission on the complex. Visible near the shadow are portions of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Turkey.

Dramatic changes have been observed at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. On May 2, 2010, lava flow had been previously reported. Satellite image.

Southern Mars: It's Spring!

$Ushas Mons, a volcano in the southern hemisphere of Venus is shown in this radar image from NASA's Magellan spacecraft. The volcano is marked by numerous bright lava flows and a set of north-south trending fractures.$

Chausey, French Channel Islands. Chausey is a group of small islands and islets off the coast of Normandy and is part of the French Channel Islands. Chausey bounced back and forth between England and France for 800 years before finally officially belonging to France in the 19th century. The archipelago comprises 365 islands at low tide (2019 image), compared to only 52 islands at high tide (2018 image). The images were acquired July 7, 2018 and September 10, 2019, cover an area of 6.7 by 10.5 km, and are located at 48.9 degrees north, 1.8 degrees west. With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of about 50 to 300 feet (15 to 90 meters), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet. ASTER is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched Dec. 18, 1999, on Terra. The instrument was built by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. NASA image acquired December 26, 2011 Off the coast of South Africa, near where the South Atlantic meets the Southern Indian Ocean, a massive summer phytoplankton bloom colored the waters with a swirl of turquoise, green and white in late December 2011. Although this circular bloom has the appearance of a precious antique gaming marble, it is actually the result of millions of tiny plant-like organisms (phytoplankton) which are growing where nutrient-rich waters mix together. Each spring and summer, lengthening sunshine comes to the southern oceans, providing light to spur the growth of these microscopic plants. The lengthening light also melts sea ice, which can release additional nutrients into the sea. Blooms such as this one become a banquet for krill, fish and other marine species which survive in these cool waters. This photograph, taken during the Apollo 8 lunar orbit mission, covers an area in the foreground to the northwest of the crater Tsiolkovsky on the lunar farside. The area in the foreground is located at about 15 degrees south latitude and 120 degrees east longitude. The lunar surface probably has less pronounced color than indicated by this print.

STS091-713-061 (2-12 June 1998) --- The vertical stabilizer of the Space Shuttle Discovery runs through this Atlantic Ocean image made from its crew cabin. Many sets of internal waves are seen in the 70mm frame traveling through an area off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. There are seven sets that run perpendicular to each other. Internal waves are tidally induced and travel below the surface of the ocean along a density change which occurs often around 150 feet deep. According to NASA scientists studying the STS-91 collection, the waves are visible because, as the wave action smoothes out the smaller waves on the surface, the manner in which the sun is reflected is changed.
