ISS007-E-12914 (18 August 2003) --- This view featuring Egypts Great pyramids of Giza (right center) was taken by an Expedition 7 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Giza is a royal burial place, commissioned and built by pharaohs during the fourth dynasty around 2550 BC. Today, Giza is a rapidly growing region of Cairo. Population growth in Egypt continues to soar, leading to new construction. New roads for large new developments are obvious in the desert hills northwest and southwest of the pyramids.

The Niger River runs through Mali and leads to Lake Deebo in this picture from the International Space Station as it orbited 259 miles above the African nation. The historical city of Timbuktu (out of frame) is farther to the north and lies near the river.

ISS040-E-070439 (19 July 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the Earth-orbiting International Space Station recorded this July 19 image of wildfires which are plaguing the Northwest and causing widespread destruction. The orbital outpost was flying 223 nautical miles above a point on Earth located at 48.0 degrees north latitude and 116.9 degrees west longitude when the image was exposed. The state of Washington is especially affected by the fires, many of which have been blamed on lightning. This particular fire was part of the Carlton Complex Fire, located near the city of Brewster in north central Washington. The reservoir visible near the center of the image is Banks Lake.

The Rio de la Plata separates the nations of Argentina (bottom) and Uruguay (top) in this photograph from the International Space Station as it orbited 269 miles above. Barely visible in the fertile lowlands of South America, are the populous cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina (center), and Montevideo, Uruguay (upper right).

ISS028-E-006059 (28 May 2011) --- One of the Expedition 28 crew members, photographing Earth images onboard the International Space Station while docked with the space shuttle Endeavour and flying at an altitude of just under 220 miles, captured this frame of the Salton Sea. The body of water, easily identifiable from low orbit spacecraft, is a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault. The agricultural area is within the Coachella Valley.

ISS026-E-015233 (5 Jan. 2011) --- This image featuring the San Francisco Bay area was recorded with a still camera using a 180-mm lens by one of the Expedition 26 crew members aboard the International Space Station, flying 220 miles above Earth.

61C-32-089 (12 Jan. 1986) --- This nearly-vertical handheld Hasselblad image over Chile was photographed from an altitude of 176 nautical miles during the sixth orbit of the space shuttle Columbia on Jan. 12, 1986. Many of the noted Andes volcanoes can be seen in the frame. Laguna Verde (Green Lake) is near the center of the frame. Center coordinates are located at 22.5 degrees south latitude and 68 degrees west longitude. The shuttle was 176 nautical miles above a point centered at 21.8 degrees south latitude and 67.3 degrees west longitude.

ISS007-E-05697 (20 May 2003) --- This image, photographed by an Expedition 7 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS), shows Gosses Bluff, an impact crater sandwiched between the MacDonnell Range to the north and the James Range to the south in Australias Northern Territory  it is about 160 kilometers west of Alice Springs. It is one of the most studied of the Australian impact craters. The impactor, an asteroid or comet, was, according to scientists, probably about 1 kilometer in diameter and crashed into the Earth about 142 million years ago. The isolated circular feature within the crater consists of a central ring of hills about 4.5 kilometers in diameter. The grayish feature surrounding the inner ring probably marks the original boundary of the outer rim.

iss070e030756 (Nov. 25, 2023) --- Dibru Saikhowa National Park on the Brahmaputra River in northeastern India is pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 260 miles above the subcontinental nation.

STS071-705-055 (27 June-7 July 1995) --- This vertical view over the central Andes Mountains was photographed from the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Atlantis during the ten-day STS-71 mission. It is one of many still visuals shown by the returning crew during its post-flight press briefing on July 18, 1995. Views of Earth from orbit often make landscapes seem flat, but this view taken with the Sun near the horizon and with a 250mm lens able to pick up detail reveals the conical peaks of numerous volcanoes. The dusting of snow makes the view more vivid as the peaks cast black shadows. The snow is a few days old in this view since several roads can be seen crossing dry lake beds (smooth white areas between mountains, top right), indicating that vehicles have crushed and melted the thin snow. According to NASA scientists observing the STS-71 photography, some volcanoes are not yet mapped. They believe that most of the snow-covered peaks reach more than 16,000 feet in altitude.

ISS005-E-5419 (18 June 2002) --- This photograph, taken by the International Space Stations Expedition Five crew on June 18, 2002, shows the Hayman Fire burning in the foothills southwest of Denver. Astronauts use a variety of lenses and look angles as their orbits pass over wildfires to document the long-distance movements of smoke from the fires as well as details of the burning areas. In this perspective view, Littleton, Chatfield Lake and the Arkansas River are all visible. ISS025-E-005538 (30 Sept. 2010) --- The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe, Africa is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 25 crew member on the International Space Station. The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe is a prominent geological feature that extends for over 550 kilometers, varying from 3-12 kilometers in width across the center of the country northeast - southwest; the southern end of the Dyke is illustrated in this view. The Dyke (or Dike in American English) is a layered mafic intrusion of igneous, metal-bearing rock that has been dated using uranium-lead isotopes to approximately 2.5 billion years in age, according to scientists. It intrudes even older rocks of the African craton, or core of oldest rocks forming the continent; in cross section, the Great Dyke looks somewhat triangular or keel-shaped suggesting to geologists that it rose along deep faults associated with extension of the African crust. SL4-137-3566 (12 Dec. 1973) --- A group of clouds near New Zealand, as photographed from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit by one of the Skylab 4 crew members. The camera used was a hand-held 70mm Hasselblad with SO-368 medium speed Ektachrome. This picture shows vividly how low sun angles enhance relief, giving these clouds a three-dimensional appearance. In addition to being pretty, this photograph can be used to study the line of storms seen here at sunset. Relative heights of individuals cells can be measured, as well as their relation to the surrounding clouds.

STS099-714-060 (11-22 February 2000) ---One of the STS-99 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour recorded this 70mm image of Cairo, one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The city is moving outside the dark-colored Nile valley into the surrounding desert. New developments are side by side with ancient monuments. The pyramids at Giza are highlighted by their shadows and the new development in the desert to the South is outlined by lighter-colored roads. Further south of the Giza pyramids on the west side of the Nile River are the Step and Bent Pyramids, respectively.

ISS015-E-15323 (27 June 2007) --- Part of Bechar Basin, Algeria is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 15 crewmember on the International Space Station. The Bechar Basin of northwestern Algeria reaches depths of 8,000 meters, and is a producing hydrocarbon region. According to scientists, the basin was formed as Paleozoic (approximately 250-540 million years old) sedimentary layers were folded and faulted during much later collision of the continents of Africa and Europe during the Tertiary Period (approximately 2-65 million years ago). Hydrocarbon reservoirs are located within clastic (formed of variably-sized pieces of pre-existing rock) sedimentary rocks and fossilized coral reefs. Dark brown to tan folded ridges of these Paleozoic sedimentary layers extend across this view from top to bottom. ISS015-E-28001 (12 Sept. 2007) --- A section of Dinosaur National Monument along the Yampa River in Colorado, which straddles the Colorado/Utah border, is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 15 crewmember on the International Space Station. Dinosaur National Monument is perhaps best known for the abundant fossils found in the approximately 145 Ma (mega-annum, or millions of years old) Morrison Formation exposed in valleys and low ridges, according to scientists. The fossil assemblage is a unique record of terrestrial life of the period (dinosaurs, plants, and other animal species). Remains accumulated in streams and shallow lakes and were swiftly buried (and preserved) by sediments associated with those environments. Scientists believe these sediments in turn were lithified over many millions of years as they were buried under younger deposits -- forming the distinctive stratigraphy of the Monument. Sochi is a city in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located on the Black Sea coast near the border between Georgia/Abkhazia and Russia. It has an area of 1,353 square miles or 3,505 square kilometers.

iss064e011532 (Dec. 9, 2020) --- A portion of the Sahara Desert in central western Algeria is pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 261 miles above the African nation.

STS039-151-179 (28 April-6 May 1991) --- A large format frame of one of the USSR's volcanic complex (Kamchatka area) with the active volcano Klyuchevskaya (Kloo-chevs'-ska-ya), 15,584 feet in elevation. The last reported eruption of the volcano was on April 8, but an ash and steam plume extending to the south was observed by the STS-39 crew almost three weeks later. The south side of the volcano is dirty from the ash fall and landslide activity. The summit is clearly visible, as is the debris flow from an earlier eruption. Just north of the Kamchatka River is Shiveluch, a volcano which was active in early April. There are more than 100 volcanic edifices recognized on Kamchatka, with 15 classified as active.

On May 26, 2014, an enormous landslide came roaring from above in a sparsely inhabited area of Mesa County, Arizona, near the town of Collbran. This image was acquired by NASA's Terra spacecraft.

Center point coordinates are located at 35.8 degrees north latitude and 89.7 degrees west longitude The areas of Ruckers Place, Tenn. and Tomato, Ark. are surrounded by water, while Barfield, Ark. is still dry behind the levee on the right side of the image. North is toward the bottom of the photo.

STS068-150-045 (30 September 1994) --- (Kliuchevskoi Volcano) The major eruption that began September 30, 1994 (launch day) got almost immediate coverage by the astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The eruption cloud reached 60,000 feet above sea level, and the winds carried ash as far as 640 miles southeast from the volcano into the North Pacific air routes. This picture was made with a large format Linhof camera. While astronauts used handheld camera's to keep up with the Kamchatka event, instruments in the cargo bay of Endeavour recorded data to support the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL-2) mission.

ISS043182340 (05/08/2015) --- NASA astronaut Scott Kelly took this intriguing picture of Mount Etna, a volcano on the Italian island of Sicily. Located on the northeast part of the island it first erupted 500,000 years ago and is still active today. Scott tweeded this image from the International Space Station with the comment: "MtEtna Highest European active #volcano lives up to its Italian name Mongibello (beautiful mountain) from space too".

ISS036E002106 (18 May 2013) --- Pavlof Volcano was captured in the fourth day of its eruption by one of the Expedition 36 crew members on the International Space Station. Pavlof volcano, onn the Alaskan Peninsula about 625 miles (1,000 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage, jetted lava into the air and spewed an ash cloud 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) high. The space station was above a point in the North Pacific Ocean located at 49.1 degrees north latitude and 157.4 degrees west longitude, about 475 miles south-southeast of the volcano. The volcanic plume extends southeastward. The volcano began erupting May 13.

ISS026-E-028469 (20 Feb. 2011) --- Backdropped by a blue and white part of Earth, the unpiloted ISS Progress 39 supply vehicle appears to be very small as it departs from the International Space Station at 8:12 a.m. (EST) on Feb. 20, 2011. At 11:12 a.m., the deorbit burn braked the trash-loaded cargo ship into its re-entry trajectory over the Pacific Ocean, where it was burned up in Earths atmosphere.

ISS008-E-17326 (28 February 2004) --- Mt. Fuji, Japans tallest volcano (3776 meters) and national symbol, is featured in this photo taken by an Expedition 8 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Fuji is located about 110 kilometers (70 miles) west-southwest of Tokyo in central Honshu, Japan. The summit crater is about 250 meters deep, with a diameter of about 500 meters. Fuji last erupted in 1707 from Hoei crater, a vent on the mountains southeastern flank. When this image was taken, the winter snow cover highlighted trails, roads and other clearings above a certain elevation. Developments on Fujis lower flanks, which include military installations and tourist resorts, remained snow-free.

. iss069e000127 (March 30, 2023) - Mount Etna, an active stratovolcano on Italy's island of Sicily, billows smoke in this oblique photograph from the International Space Station as it orbited 262 miles above the Black Sea coast of Ukraine.

ISS033-E-009334 (4 Oct. 2012) --- Several tiny satellites are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 33 crew member on the International Space Station. The satellites were released outside the Kibo laboratory using a Small Satellite Orbital Deployer attached to the Japanese modules robotic arm on Oct. 4, 2012. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide, flight engineer, set up the satellite deployment gear inside the lab and placed it in the Kibo airlock. The Japanese robotic arm then grappled the deployment system and its satellites from the airlock for deployment.

ISS037-E-022473 (29 Oct. 2013) --- La Malinche Volcano, Mexico is featured in this image photo graphed by an Expedition 37 crew member on the International Space Station. Located approximately 30 kilometers to the northeast of the city of Puebla, the summit of Volcan la Malinche rises to an elevation of 4,461 meters above sea level. This detailed photograph highlights the snow-dusted summit, and the deep canyons that cut into the flanks of this eroded stratovolcano. La Malinche has not been historically active, but radiometric dating of volcanic rocks and deposits associated with the structure indicate a most recent eruption near the end of the 12th century. NASA scientists cite evidence that lahars, or mudflows, associated with an eruption about 3,100 years ago, affected Pre-Columbian settlements in the nearby Puebla basin. ISS017-E-020538 (21 Oct. 2008) --- Arkenu Craters 1 and 2 in Libya are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 17 crewmember on the International Space Station. Geologists often study features on Earth, such as impact craters, to gain insight into processes that occur on other planets. On Earth, more than 150 impact craters have been identified on the continents, but only a few of these are classified as double impact craters. One such example, the Arkenu Craters in northern Africa, is shown in this image. Arkenu 1 and 2 are double impact structures located in eastern Libya (22.04 degrees north latitude and 23.45 degrees east longitude) in the Sahara desert, with diameters of approximately 6.8 kilometers and 10.3 kilometers, respectively. The craters are unusual in that they both exhibit concentric annular ridge structures (gray circles in the image indicate the position of the outermost visible ridges).
