ISS034-E-035983 (28 Jan. 2013) --- This view, photographed by one of the Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station flying approximately 240 miles above Earth, shows Tropical Cyclone Felleng in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar just prior to being elevated to a Category 4. At the time the photo was taken, the storm was located at 8.5 degrees south latitude and 49.5 degrees east longitude.

ISS007-E-14745 (13 September 2003) --- This close-up view of the eye of Hurricane Isabel was taken by one of the Expedition 7 crewmembers onboard the International Space Station (ISS). At the time this photo was taken, Isabel had reformed to a Category 5 storm, packing winds of 160 miles per hour.

This photo of hurricane Lili, captured during the Expedition Five mission, shows the compact storm system and the structure of its estimated 15 nautical mile wide eye. After strengthening to a Category 4 storm (125 knots with the central pressure of 940 millibars), Lili weakened to a Category 2 before slamming into the central coast of Louisiana just south of Lafayette. This is one of many photos that stem form the Crew Observation (CEO) experiment that has been a part of every Space Station expedition.

ISS017-E-005600 (29 April 2008) --- Outflow obscures the definition of the eye and center of Tropical Cyclone Nargis, seen when the storm was at approximately 13.5 degrees north latitude and 86.2 degrees east longitude with maximum winds of 74.9 miles per hour. Photographed by a crew member aboard the International Space Station, the storm was moving east-northeast at 070 degrees at 4.6 miles per hour. This picture was made several days prior to impact at Burma.

ISS007-E-10239 (15 July 2003) --- The crew of the International Space Station had a great seat from which to observe tropical storm Claudette as she turned into a hurricane and came ashore with high winds and heavy rains that drenched their Houston home base and other Texas areas. This digital image was recorded at 13:25:10 GMT, July 15, 2003.

iss063e059436 (July 25, 2020) --- Hurricane Hanna is pictured hitting the southern coast of Texas from the International Space Station.

ISS012-E-10079 (3 Dec. 2005) --- This picture of the eye of Hurricane Epsilon in the Atlantic Ocean was taken at 15:35:49 GMT on Dec. 3, 2005 by one of the crewmembers of Expedition 12 aboard the International Space Station. The orbital outpost was flying at an altitude of 190 nautical miles. Center point coordinates are 34.5 degrees north latitude and 44.4 degrees west longitude.

51I-35-075 (30 Aug 1985) --- Typhoon Pat was photographed on the morning of August 30th at a position of approximately 25 degrees N, 131 degrees E. Stereoscopically-overlapping photographs taken by the 51I crew provide much more detail of the three-dimensional structure of tropical cyclones than can be determined from data returned from meteorological satellites. The 51I shuttle mission was launched on August 27 and landed September 3. The mission was flown in the space shuttle orbiter Discovery.

STS-65 Earth observation taken aboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, shows Hurricane Emilia in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Hurricane Emilia's wind speeds exceeded 150 knots. This high oblique view of the storm shows numerous spiral bands of thunderstorms, overshooting thunderstorm tops at the tropopause, and a well developed eye at the center of the picture. Shuttle photography provides high resolution details of these powerful and destructive systems that are not fully possible from lower-resolution, unmanned satellites.

ISS040-E-049734 (8 July 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station photographed a series of images of Typhoon Neoguri in the vicinity of Japan on July 8, 2014. This 24mm focal length oblique image was photographed at 21 08 20 GMT. The astronauts commented that it was difficult to get the entire storm into a single frame.

Typhoon Chan-Hom's eye was visible from space when NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead early on July 8, 2015. The MODIS instrument, known as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer, flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. When Aqua passed over Typhoon Chan-Hom on July 8 at 04 25 UTC (12 25 a.m. EDT), MODIS captured a visible-light image of the storm that clearly showed its eye. The MODIS image also a ring of powerful thunderstorms surrounding the eye of the storm, and the bulk of thunderstorms wrapping around the system from west to east, along the southern side. At 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT), Typhoon Chan-Hom's maximum sustained winds were near 85 knots (97.8 mph/157.4 kph). Tropical-storm-force winds extended 145 nautical miles (166.9 miles/268.5 km) from the center, making the storm almost 300 nautical miles (345 miles/555 km) in diameter. Typhoon-force winds extended out to 35 nautical miles (40 miles/64.8 km) from the center. Chan-Hom's eye was centered near 20.5 North latitude and

ISS009-E-18129 (21:08:57 GMT, 12 August 2004) --- Less than a minute after ISS009-E-18123, the Expedition 9 crew captured this more detailed view of Hurricane Charley looking southward. The small eye is visible, but not cloud-free yet. Spiraling streaks of high cirrus clouds around the south southern and western edges of the storm indicate the pronounced outflow of air above the storm.

ISS008-E-19643 (27 March 2004) --- This image featuring Hurricane Catarina was taken by an Expedition 8 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). Until this past week only two tropical cyclones had ever been noted in the South Atlantic Basin, and no hurricanes. However, late last week, a circulation center well off the coast of southern Brazil developed tropical cyclone characteristics and continued to intensify as it moved westward. The system developed an eye and apparently reached hurricane strength on Friday, March 28, before eventually making landfall late on Saturday. The crew of the ISS was notified of the cyclone and acquired this excellent oblique photo of the storm just as it made landfall on the southern Brazilian state of Catarina (the storm has been unofficially dubbed Hurricane Catarina). Note the clockwise circulation of Southern Hemisphere cyclones, the well-defined banding features, and the eyewall of at least a Category 1 system. The coastline

ISS028-E-028782 (22 Aug. 2011) --- This panoramic view of recently-formed Hurricane Irene was acquired by the crew of the International Space Station early Monday afternoon from a point over the coastal waters of Venezuela. At the time Irene was packing winds of 80mph and was just north of the Mona Passage between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Although no eye was visible at this time, the storm was strengthening and exhibited the size and structure of a classic Cape Verde hurricane as it tracked west-northwestward towards the southern Bahamas.

ISS017-E-010715 (9 July 2008) --- Hurricane Bertha was traveling northward at 10 knots (11.5 miles per hour) across the eastern part of the central Atlantic Ocean when this image was taken on July 9 by one of the Expedition 17 crewmembers aboard the International Space Station from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above the Earth.The sustained winds were 85 knots (97.9 miles per hour) with gusts up to 105 knots (121.0 miles per hour) and predicted to intensify. Mature and developing Cumulonimbus-type clouds are seen scattered through the cloud bands of the hurricane's system.

ISS009-E-22497 (13 September 2004) --- Hurricane Ivan was photographed as it entered the Gulf of Mexico late Monday (22:39:23 GMT, Sept. 13) by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke aboard the International Space Station, 230 miles above Earth. At the time, Ivan was a category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph. Fincke, the NASA Station Science Officer, and Station Commander Gennady Padalka are in the final month of a six-month mission aboard the research platform.

ISS043E044527 (03/23/2015) --- This Earth observation of the Patagonia Ice Fields in South America was taken during a day pass of the International Space Station by the crew of Expedition 43. The Commander of 43, NASA astronaut Terry Virts tweeted this comment on the Earth image: "Awe-inspiring Earth"!

ISS007-E-14902 (September 2003) --- This close-up view of the eye of Hurricane Isabel was taken by one of the Expedition 7 crewmembers onboard the International Space Station (ISS). There was no date down linked with this image, therefore the exact time data of this photo cannot be determined.

iss051e039765 (May 9, 2017) --- Cyclone Donna was photographed just East of Australia as the International Space Station orbited about 250 miles above. Donna is the strongest South Pacific cyclone in the month of May ever recorded.

On Oct. 16 at 17 45 UTC NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of Hurricane Gonzalo in the Atlantic Ocean.

AS09-23-3592 (3-13 March 1969) --- Cyclonic storm system, located 1,200 miles north of Hawaii, as photographed from the Apollo 9 spacecraft during its 10-day, Earth-orbital space mission. This picture was made on the 124th revolution of Apollo 9. This cyclonic storm system can also be seen in the ESSA-7 photograph taken on March 11, 1969.

ISS009-E-25178 (26 September 2004) --- The Expedition 9 crew aboard the International Space Station recorded this vertical view of Hurricane Jeanne at 17:47:42 GMT, Sept 26, 2004.

ISS040-E-089388 (7 Aug. 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station, from an altitude of 221 nautical miles, photographed this image of Typhoon Halong at 09:39:02 GMT on Aug. 7, 2014. The orbital outpost was flying directly above a point on Earth located at 26.1 degrees north latitude and 127.8 degrees east longitude. Part of one of the station's robot arms can be seen in upper left.

NASAs Terra satellite passed over Tropical Storm Andrea on June 5 at 16:25 UTC (12:25 p.m. EDT) and the MODIS instrument captured this visible image of the storm. Andreas clouds had already extended over more than half of Florida.

ISS043E182257 (05/08/2015) --- Hurricane Anna moves onto the US east coast with 50 mile an hour winds and heavy rain. Anna moved first into just north of Myrtle Beach South Carolina and is moving toward North Carolina and later Virginia. This image was taken by the crew onboard the International Space Station, Expedition 43.

This image was made from data acquired by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounding System (AIRS) instrument suite aboard NASA's Aqua spacecraft in December, 2002, just as the eye of Supertyphoon Pongsona was about to pass over Guam.

On Oct. 18 at 17:35 UTC (1:35 p.m EDT) the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite saw Hurricane Gonzalo approaching Newfoundland.

ISS011-E-12988 (14 September 2005, 19:16:29 GMT) --- This oblique view of Hurricane Ophelia was taken on the afternoon of September 14 from the International Space Station. The somewhat ill-defined eye is located just above right center. The slow-moving storm is off the coast of the Carolinas.

ISS012-E-5275 (19 Oct. 2005) --- This image of Hurricane Wilma was taken at 8:24 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 19, by the crew aboard NASA's international space station as the complex flew 222 miles above the storm. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with winds near 175 miles per hour. The storm was located in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

Hurricane Helene From Space

This visible image of Tropical Storm Arthur was taken by the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite on July 2 at 18 50 UTC (2 50 p.m. EDT). A cloud-covered eye is clearly visible.

On Oct. 19 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this visible image of Hurricane Gonzalo east of Newfoundland, Canada.

ISS014-E-17165 (21 March 2007) --- A plume at Shiveluch Volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 14 crewmember on the International Space Station. Shiveluch, one of Kamchatka's most active volcanoes, began its latest activity with gas and steam emissions in mid-late March 2007. This image was captured around mid-morning on or around March 21 2007, and shows a steam plume, probably containing minor amounts of ash, blowing westward from the summit of the volcano. The crewmembers were transiting the southern tip of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula; with a clear view of the volcano about 5 degrees north of the ground track of the station. Subsequent eruptions on March 29 and 30 have been recorded by the Kamchatka Volcano Observatory and NASA. The volcano's southern flank, clearly visible in this northeast-looking oblique view, comprises a horseshoe-shaped caldera from a late Pleistocene eruption, subsequently blanketed by additional ash depos

ISS017-E-015162 (4 Sept. 2008) --- Hurricane Ike was still a Category 4 storm on the morning of Sept. 4 when this photo was taken from the International Space Station's vantage point of 220 miles above the Earth. The season's ninth named storm was churning west-northwestward through the mid-Atlantic Ocean sporting winds of 120 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 145.

ISS009-E-21205 (2 September 2004) --- From 230 miles above, this is a view into the eye of Hurricane Frances as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean almost 500 miles east-southeast of West Palm Beach, Fla., at about 8 a.m EDT Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004. At the time, Frances was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph. Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke took this photo through the window of the International Space Station. Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka and Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, are in the fifth month of a six-month stay on the orbiting research platform.

During a total solar eclipse, the MODIS instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite recorded this image of the shadow of the moon over the South Pacific Ocean on March 8, 2016, at 10 05 pm EST. This total solar eclipse was the last one before an August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse that will be visible in much of the United States.

ISS040-E-045408 (8 July 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station photographed a series of images of Typhoon Neoguri in the vicinity of Japan on July 7, 2014. This 70mm oblique image featuring the eye was photographed at 21:52:20 GMT.

The Polar Vortex is a whirling and persistent large area of low pressure, found typically over both north and south poles. The northern Polar Vortex is pushing southward over western Wisconsin/eastern Minnesota today, Monday, January 6, 2014 and is bringing frigid temperatures to half of the continental United States. It is expected to move northward back over Canada toward the end of the week. This image was captured by NOAA's GOES-East satellite on January 6, 2014 at 1601 UTC/11 01 a.m. EST. A frontal system that brought rain to the coast is draped from north to south along the U.S. East Coast. Behind the front lies the clearer skies bitter cold air associated with the Polar Vortex. The GOES image also revealed snow on the ground in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and Missouri, stretching into the Great Plains. ISS011-E-12836 (11 September 2005, 19:31:17 GMT) --- This image of Hurricane Ophelia was captured by the Expedition 11 crew aboard the International Space Station on the afternoon September 11, 2005. The hurricane, located at 31.6 degrees north latitude and 75.8 degrees west longitude, was packing winds of 80 miles per hour when the photo was made.

Like a ship carving its way through the sea, the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands parted the clouds. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image on February 2, 2017. The ripples in the clouds are known as gravity waves. Hurricane Michael was captured from the International Space Station on Oct. 10 after the storm made landfall as a category 4 hurricane over the Florida panhandle. The National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds near 145 mph with the potential to bring dangerous storm surge and heavy rains to the Florida panhandle area.

ISS040-E-045605 (7 July 2014) --- The International Space Station, including these two temporarily docked Russian spacecraft, made more than one pass near Typhoon Neoguri on July 7, and Expedition 40 Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency captured its startling dimensions in a day-long series of still photos. In a tweet later in the day, Gerst marveled that even with a fish-eye lens he couldn't capture the whole storm. A 28mm focal length was used for a small sequence of oblique pictures such as this one. The picture was taken at 06 57 53 GMT on July 7, 2014.

Hurricane Rita was building up to an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAOs Terra satellite captured this image at 12:10 p.m., U.S. Eastern time on September 21, 2005. The storm bears the markings of a powerful hurricane: it is compact and circular with an open eye through which the deep blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico are visible. At the time this image was acquired, Rita had winds of 220 kilometers per hour (140 miles per hour)

NOAA's GOES-East satellite provided a look at the frigid eastern two-thirds of the U.S. on Jan. 7, 2015, that shows a blanket of northern snow, lake-effect snow from the Great Lakes and clouds behind the Arctic cold front. A visible picture captured at 1600 UTC (11 a.m. EST) showed the effects of the latest Arctic outbreak. The cold front that brought the Arctic air has moved as far south as Florida, and stretches back over the Gulf of Mexico and just west of Texas today. The image shows clouds behind the frontal boundary stretching from the Carolinas west over the Heartland. Farther north, a wide band of fallen snow covers the ground from New England west to Montana, with rivers appearing like veins. The GOES-East satellite image also shows wind-whipped lake-effect snows off the Great Lakes, blowing to the southeast. Meanwhile, Florida, the nation's warm spot appeared almost cloud-free. STS-65 Earth observation of Hurricane Emilia in Pacific Ocean was taken aboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102. This vertical view, photographed with a handheld 70mm camera, reveals the well-defined eye of the hurricane as it moves westerly several hundred miles southeast of the big island of Hawaii. Early in the flight the crew was able to observe the evolution of the storm and there was some concern that it might eventually head toward the Hawaiian Islands. Fortunately it did not.

ISS040-E-016569 (21 June 2014) --- From an altitude of 223 nautical miles, one of the Expedition 40 crew members on the International Space Station photographed this nearly vertical image of Guadalupe Island and the Von Karman cloud vortices that are its storied neighbors just off southern California's Pacific Coast.

WASHINGTON (July 8, 2014) An infrared satellite image of Typhoon Neoguri provided by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Monterey, Calif., shows the storm at approximately 6:00 a.m. EST Tuesday, July 8, 2014 near Okinawa.

December 28, 2009 - Satellite view of Mayon Volcano on the Philippine island of Luzon, emitting a thin volcanic plume. Ash obscures the summit crater and clouds hide lava flows on the volcanos flanks.

NASA and NOAA satellites are studying the triple tropical tempests that are now romping through the Eastern Pacific Ocean. NOAA's GOES-West satellite captured Tropical Storm Karina, Tropical Storm Lowell and newly formed Tropical Storm Marie on August 22. NOAA's GOES-West satellite captured all three storms in an infrared image at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT), and Tropical Lowell clearly dwarfs Karina to its west, and Marie to the east. The infrared image was created at NASA/NOAA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
