Julio ¡lvarez del Vayo (Villaviciosa de OdÛn, Community of Madrid, 1890 ñ Geneva, Switzerland, 1975) was a Spanish Socialist politician, journalist and writer. During the Civil War he held several political offices on the Republican side: he was twice minister of Foreign Affairs, delegate to the League of Nations and commissar and general of the Army.

Originally published in 'Judge', the well-known American paper. The earthquake occurred on the 18th April 1906 in San Francisco, California, USA which lies across the San Andreas Fault. The 1940 Bretton Woods Conference pegged the US Dollar to the British Pound at a favourable rate. However the Pound came under extreme pressure after World War II and was devalued in 1949, leading to other currency devaluations. This was the beginning of the US Dollar becoming the world's dominant currency.
