KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Members of a hurricane assessment team from Johnson Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center observe the damage to the roof of the Thermal Protection System (TPS) Facility at KSC after Hurricane Frances hit the east coast of Central Florida and Kennedy Space Center. The facility, which creates the TPS tiles, blankets and all the internal thermal control systems for the Space Shuttles, is almost totally unserviceable at this time after losing approximately 35 percent of its roof. Equipment and materials that survived the storm have been relocated to the RLV hangar near the KSC Shuttle Landing Facility.

On July 15, Deputy Commanding General Heitkamp visited the Pittsburgh District to tour the construction work at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon, PA. The construction work is part of the Lower Monongahela River project, which will replace the nearly 100-year-old fixed-crest dam with a gated dam at Braddock Locks and Dam 2, remove Locks and Dam 3 in Elizabeth and construct two larger locks at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon. The Braddock, Elizabeth and Charleroi locks are the three oldest operating-navigation facilities on the Monongahela River and experience the highest commercial-traffic volume in the entire Monongahela River Navigation System.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -At NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians pour concrete onto the movable launch platform for the Project Morpheus lander at the north end of the Shuttle Landing Facility, or SLF.Testing of the prototype lander has been ongoing at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston in preparation for free flight. The SLF will provide the lander with the kind of field necessary for realistic testing, complete with rocks, craters and hazards to avoid. Morpheus utilizes an autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology, or ALHAT, payload that will allow it to navigate to clear landing sites amidst rocks, craters and other hazards during its descent. Project Morpheus is one of 20 small projects comprising the Advanced Exploration Systems, or AES, program in NASAs Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. AES projects pioneer new approaches for rapidly developing prototype systems, demonstrating key capabilities and validating operational concepts for

USACE infrastructure assessment team employees conduct a detailed Applied Technology Council - 45, or ATC-45, Rapid Evaluation Safety Assessment on Fort Myers Beach, Florida, Nov. 1. USACE officials, along with local county officials, are supporting the state of Florida and FEMA by assessing buildings to ensure they are safe. The ATC-45 is an industry standard safety evaluation after windstorms and floods. Following the assessments, USACE forwards the information to the local county officials for them to make a final determination. In addition to infrastructure assessments, USACE is actively supporting other Hurricane Ian recovery efforts to include Operation Blue Roof, debris technical monitoring and temporary housing.

Liberty Island, N.Y., May 6, 2013 The Statue of Liberty facilities were damaged during Hurricane Sandy with nearly 75%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% of the island under water. The training is for personnel who will be working to insulate pipes on the mobile launcher (ML). The ML is equipped with cryogenic fluid lines that will deliver hydrogen and oxygen to NASA's Space Launch System rocket. The lines must be kept well-insulated to maintain temperatures cold enough to keep fluids in a liquid state. In a new process, workers are learning how to pack spaces between pipes with aerogel granules in the same manner as they will on the ML.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Karl Stolleis, kneeling, and Nick Pack prepare an instrument package for testing as part of a high-altitude balloon flight for the Rocket University program. The test flight was used to evaluate the stability of an instrumented capsule as it fell to Earth before its parachute opened.
