Panel (part of a set) ca. 1510 Nicolas Castille The panels decorations, which include putti holding heraldic shields or strings of beads, floral scrolls, masks, and fabulous creatures, correspond to French adaptations of Italian motifs derived from prints and other sources. The portraits represent the donor, Georges dAmboise (1460-1510), in his cardinals hat and cloak and Louis XII (1462-1515; ruled 1498-1515) surrounded by a wreath topped by a porcupine, a symbol of the monarchs courage and ability to defend his kingdom. These panels and the ones displayed nearby are from the now-destroyed chapel of Cardinal dAmboises chteau de Gaillon.. Panel (part of a set) 209127

Ornamental Panel (from a Ceiling), 500s (frame) and 700s (central panel). Egyptian, Coptic, 4th-5th century. Wood with paint; average: 70.6 x 144.2 cm (27 13/16 x 56 3/4 in.). This wooden panel and its frame come from different locations. The four narrow panels forming the outer frame are stylistically datable to the 500s. The large central rectangular panel might date to the 700s. It is most likely a carved ceiling, but its architectural context is unknown. Both panel and frame have been cut down and joined together at some point in their history under unknown circumstances. The decorative program of the main panel features two large rosettes surrounded by florets, leaves, and fruit. The outer frame features two flying angels holding a wreath, a peacock, an octopus, a seated fisherman who holds a long line with a fish attached, and a swimming boy with a dolphin. The vocabulary of the frame is dominated by water life, particularly of the Nile and its banks. Though separated from its

Detail from the main portal doors from the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, (more commonly called the 'Duomo'). Florence, Italy. Three huge bronze doors, adorned with scenes from the life of Madonna. They date from 1899 to 1903. Around the doors are multiple works of art: Mosaics by Niccolò Barabino, a half-relief by Tito Sarrocchi, and a series of niches and busts. The duomo was started in 1296 based on Arnolfo di Cambio's design, but was not complete until 1436 when Filippo Brunelleschi engineered the dome. One of Italy's largest churches.

Allegory of Music ca. 1570-90 Northern French To create this panel three leather sheets decorated in the cuir bouilli technique, whereby the wet leather was manipulated and molded into the desired shape, were joined together. After the material was hardened and dry, the ornamental details were incised and punched into the surface. The decorated panel and the separate egg-and-dart frame, also made of leather and possibly original to the piece, were then mounted on an oak panel that was at one point installed as a door.The large elongated female figure clad in a richly draped costume and holding a viola da braccio is most likely Polyhymnia, the ancient Greek muse of sacred music, or the personification of music. The panel may have been part of an extensive wall decoration incorporating the Seven Liberal Arts, a typical Humanist scheme, for a modestly sized studiolo, or study.
