Embroidered sampler 1670 Dutch, probably Friesland Samplers from Friesland, in the northwest of the Netherlands, are characterized chiefly by many alphabets and a tree of life motif. This sampler also features pierced and crowned hearts and windmills, motifs typical of samplers from the Netherlands. The sampler includes stitched initials "T", "H", and "HK" flanking hearts. It is possible the sampler maker embroidered the letters to commemorate a siblings marriage. If this is the case, "T" would be the initial of the siblings first name and "HK" the initials of the spouses full name. The year 1670, stitched below "T hearts H," is either the year in which the maker completed her work or the year her sibling got married.. Embroidered sampler 228104

Lincoln Cathedral: communion plate, 1887-1889. Butterfield, William 1887-1889 See also Series III for written estimate. A broadly representative selection of drawings for building and manufacture of designs, representing the various types of commissions Butterfield received and illustrating his work in promoting Gothic Revival. Also included are estimates as well as record drawings (measured drawings) of buildings not designed by Butterfield. William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a British architect known for the Gothic revival style he championed. He studied with E. L. Blackburne and set up his own practice in 1840. A member of the Cambridge Camden Society, later the Ecclesiastical Society, he contributed designs to their journal The Ecclesiologist. Most of his work was for church designs, apart from that for schools and colleges (Rugby School and Keble College Oxford), and the Winchester County Hospital. Perhaps his best-known building is the All Saints Church, Margaret Street, London

Band Fragment 11th-12th century This wool fabric is highly colourful, with bands in cobalt, brown, dark blue, tan and red. The right edge has the original fringe and a checkerboard pattern. The inscription on the textile, executed in beige colour, is repeated in five horizontal bands and is a prayer to God (O who you are, I call him’). Booklet of embroidery and drawnwork early 17th century probably Portuguese At some point fairly early in its history, the many small pieces of fabric included in this booklet were seamed together and loosely bound, to create a kind of glossary of colored and monochrome openwork patterns. Scraps of silk, glove leather and writing paper with Portuguese text were employed to stabilize the pages. The recycling of materials and the compact nature of the booklet all suggest that this was a purely practical reference work for a professional seamstress, and was not meant for display. Some of the patterns are worked in double running stitch, also referred to as "Spanish stitch," reflecting its possible origin on the Iberian peninsula in the sixteenth century..
