Date: late 15th century.Woven and embroidered textiles commissioned by noble families were among the most expensive expressions of wealth and power during the Renaissance. The production of luxurious silks was tightly regulated in order to ensure quality, and the movements of weavers were sometimes restricted to prevent the loss of technical and artistic advantages to rival city-states such as Venice, Milan, and Genoa. This stylized floral velvet is woven with a variation on a motif found in the Medici family coat of arms: the seven balls called palle (here, in the center of the largest flower). The placement of the red velvet circles on a background of golden thread draws attention to this feature. Suzani, 19th century, L.93 x W.67 in., Linen, silk; embroidered, Uzbekistan, 19th century, Part of a bride's dowry, these large silk embroideries were the most wide spread form of household decoration in Central Asia. They were often used as wall hangings and room dividers, however their first and most important use was as a cover for the bridal bed. This ceremonial use more than justified the labor and expense involved in their creation, as weddings were considered more than the joining of two individuals. Indeed, weddings represented the fusion of two families and the hoped for increase of the entire ethnic group.

Date: ca. 1835.Although its provenance is unknown, this exquisite Star of Bethlehem quilt was likely made in the southeastern United States. Quilts with a central Star of Bethlehem motif combined with chintz-appliquéd blocks and a chintz border, as seen here, have been found in Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. The presence of paired Baltimore orioles printed on the English chintz in the four corner blocks makes Maryland a likely candidate for the place of origin.
