The Sibyl ca. 1654 Willem Drost Dutch Although once a well-known Rembrandt, there is now a strong consensus that this canvas was painted about 1654-55 by his pupil, Willem Drost (1633-1659). The female type, the drawing of facial features, and the painterly execution of the costume are characteristic of Drost. The subject (which is rare in Northern Europe) and composition appear to have been inspired by a recent Italian example such as Domenichino's Cumaean Sibyl of 1616-17 in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. This illustrartion dates to the early 1900s. It shows Penelope awaiting Ulysses (also spelled Odysseus). It shows Ulysses beautiful and faithful wife Penelope, upon her palace wall, where she gazed day after day, sadly and with straining eyes, across the sea for his returning sail. The patient Penelope has become typical of all women who watch and wait for the absent.

Salome with the Head of John the Baptist ca. 1876 Gustave Moreau According to Biblical sources, Salome agreed to dance before her father, Herod II, King of Judea, in exchange for receiving the severed head of John the Baptist. Moreau treated the subject some fifteen times in oil. The majority of these paintings focus on the dramatic apparition of the head during the dance or its presentation afterward, but the seductress here appears almost innocent, stretching her body and gaze away from the bloody head, which glows with a holy light.. Shown in this 1910 illustration is an Etruscan sarcophagus from Chiusi. The original is in the Archaeological Museum in Florence. The cover of this terracotta sarcophagus depicts Larthia Seianti, a rich lady who lived in the South Tuscany near Chiusi in the second century BC. The woman is portrayed lying-down on a kline. She is wearing a sumptuous and colorful clothing, and her figure is adorned by rich jewelry. A diadem made by flowers, presumably a wreath, embellishes her hair. According to Greek mythology, Clytemnestra was the half-sister of the legendary Helen of Troy, who had been married to Menelaus, king of Sparta, and was taken to Troy by Paris. Clytemnestra was the wife of the Agamemnon, brother of Menelaus, and the mother of Orestes, Electra, and Iphigenia. When Agamemnon returned from fighting in the Trojan War, Clytemnestra conspired with her lover Aegisthus to kill Agamemnon. Orestes avenged his father's death. This early 1900s illustration shows Clytemnestra exiting the room after killing Agamemnon.
