Personnel from the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) observes the impact berm, sustained by erosion controlling vegetation, at the Puuloa Range Training Facility, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Oct. 27, 2022. The purpose of the visit was to begin a cooperative process between the DOH and MCBH toward analyzing conditions along the PRTF boundary, where state and federal jurisdictions meet.

Wildlife biologists with the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, search for signs of turtles and their nests near Fern Ridge Reservoir on July 26, 2022. As a federal agency, the Portland District provides certain protections to wildlife at Corps reservoirs. As part of those protections, Corps wildlife biologists will walk for miles in a grid pattern through areas near several Willamette Valley reservoirs to search for signs of the threatened native species of turtle, the northwestern pond turtle. Once found, the biologists will log information about the pond turtle, adding to their 30 years of data on the species. Corps Biologists hope that their actions, including efforts with Oregon State University to compile the 30 years of pond turtle data, may help make the case to list them as an endangered species, because theres still so much unknown about the turtle.

The bog turtle is the smallest turtle in North America. The species is protected under the Endangered Species Act and faces great threats from both poaching and habitat degradation as the wetlands where they live have disappeared dramatically over the dec. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Don Dankert, a biological scientist in the NASA Environmental Management Branch of Center Operations, far left, speaks to guests during ceremonies to commemorate the completion of a six-month effort to restore 1.2 mile stretch of shoreline near Launch Pads 39A and B. To help prevent erosion, 180,000 shrubs, including grasses, sunflowers, vines, sea grapes and palmettos also were planted on the new dunes.Constant pounding from tropical storms, such as Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012, other weather systems and higher than usual tides, destroyed sand dunes protecting infrastructure at the spaceport.

The U.S. Forest Service group is accompanied by a space program worker able to identify potential hazards of Shuttle parts. Kennedy Space Center workers are participating in the Columbia Recovery efforts at the Lufkin (Texas) Command Center, four field sites in East Texas, and the Barksdale, La., hangar site. KSC is working with representatives from other NASA Centers and with those from a number of federal, state and local agencies in the recovery effort. KSC provides vehicle technical expertise in the field to identify, collect and return Shuttle hardware to KSC.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District leadership met with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Erie County today at the Scoby Dam project in Springville, NY to get an overview of the project and understand some of the challenges ahead. The Springville Dam project would restore native fish passage between the upper and lower Cattaraugus Creek watershed, while maintaining a barrier to the invasive Sea Lamprey, but was put on hold as resources shifted to overcome and respond to the impacts of COVID-19.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District and U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) researchers joined Ohio Department of Natural Resources at William Harsha Lake in Batavia, Ohio, Sept. 15, 2022, for a technology demonstration of Algae Harvesting and Hydronucleation Flotation Technology (HFT) that could play an important role in the reduction of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Ohio. USACEs Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) began research projects such as the Harmful Algal Bloom Interception, Treatment, and Transformation System (HABITATS) to develop scalable solutions for managing large Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).
