Mounting The Mount January 1, 1799 Thomas Rowlandson Jockeys here don gear and mount their horses before a race. Dennis O'Kelly, a famous owner and breeder of thoroughbreds, stands at right in a red coat, instructing a jockey. The print comes from a group by Rowlandson devoted to moments in horse racing--interestingly none shows a finish. When first published around 1789, the titles were "The Mount," "The Start," "The Betting Post," and "The Course." The present example comes from an expanded reissue of 1798-99 with titles altered to "Mounting" (59.533.1697), "Racing" (59.533.1694), "Betting" (59.533.1695), with "Between Heats" (59.533.514, 59.533.1700), and "Weighing" (59.533.1696) and "Running out of the Course" (59.533.1698) added.. A Riding House 1799 () () Thomas Rowlandson This hand-colored etching pokes fun at a range of a range of physiques and abilities, as men on horseback, directed by a riding master who stands at center, moves around an interior with high windows. Bunbury exhibited a drawing of the subject at the Royal Academy in 1778 (no. 393) and it was etched and published two years later by James Bretherton. The printmaker of this ca. 1799 variation has not been identified, but may be Thomas Rowlandson, who produced dozens of Bunbury-inspired satires.. A Riding House.
