Study of the Horse for the Statue of Major General George Henry Thomas 1879, cast after 1910 John Quincy Adams Ward American This statuette was cast after a preliminary model for the horse in Ward's bronze equestrian statue of Major General George Henry Thomas (1816-1870), a Union officer during the Civil War. The monument was commissioned in 1874 by the Society of the Army of the Cumberland and unveiled in 1879; it stands in Thomas Circle at the intersections of Massachusetts and Vermont Avenues and 14th and M Streets in Washington, D.C. In Wards preliminary concept, illustrated in the Metropolitans bronze, the horse is posed so that the forequarters are elevated on the gentle incline of the base. The tail and mane are more windblown in the monumental bronze, but the two versions share the animated posture of the head. This realistic steed revolutionized American equestrian sculpture, turning it away from antique precedents toward more naturalistic, dynamic representations.. Study o

Two groups of horsemen from a Crucifixion scene, anonymous, c. 1440 In the foreground of the rising landscape with left scrub on the left and a stacking of rocks on the right, the blind longinus drives overlopped eyes. He kept the lance in the right hand, the left he rests on the shoulder of the young rider, who drives next to him. This sees up and aimed with his right hand Longinus' Lans, while his left is next to the horse's head. The third rider has the right arm forward because of the redward collar. Date: 1901, cast by March 1907.In 1901 Remington modeled this Cheyenne Indian racing on horseback. The muscular rider, wearing only a loincloth and moccasins, leans forward, clutching a spear and a quirt. His mount is depicted at full gallop, or "burning the air," as Remington described it: ears back, tail flowing, and all four hooves off the ground. Cantle Plate (Rear Saddle Plate) From a Horse Armor Probably Made for Count Antonio IV Collalto (1548-1620) ca. 1580-90 Italian, probably Brescia This cantle plate belongs to a horse armor (21.139.1a-w), which is covered with etched ornament that includes undulating foliage, mythological creatures, winged putti, and heroes from Biblical and Classical history, such as David and Goliath and Marcus Curtius. The exuberant sketchlike quality of the etching and the preference for overall decoration suggest an origin in Brescia, the second most important armor-producing center in northern Italy after Milan. Brescia was the principal supplier of arms to the Venetian Republic. Like another Italian horse armor in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 21.139.2), this example comes from the armory of the counts Collalto at the castle of San Salvatore, near Treviso. Shadow play (Chinese: 影戏, pí yĭng xì) or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images. It is popular in various cultures. At present, more than 20 countries are known to have shadow show troupes. Shadow puppetry originated during the Han Dynasty when one of the concubines of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was devastated, and he summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The officers made a shape of the concubine using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of the leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oil lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life. Shadow theatre became quite popular as early as the Song Dynasty when holidays were marked by the presentation of many shadow plays. During the Ming Dynasty there were 40 to 50 shadow show troupes in the city
