(23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. The sketches show a variety of approaches, from broad, linear strokes to refined tonal modeling. American Art 1871-1872

He documented the local architecture, sculpture, landscape, and people, while also including sketches for narrative subjects. Spanish Entertainment from the 'Bulls of Bordeaux' 1825 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish Goyas Bulls series reflects the profound transformation in bullfighting in the early nineteenth century. While his 1816 Tauromaquia synthesized the evolution of bullfighting from its origins until about 1800, this series was a tragicomic response to the spectacles decline in quality. The frequent staging of comic and amateur corridas in the same sessions as serious, professional bullfights compromised the gravity of Spains proud tradition. Made for French audiences, Spanish Entertainment hints at a Romantic identification of bullfighting with Spain. Yet, as the work of an artist living in semi-exile because of the political situation at home, it may also reflect his disillusionment with the masses, presented here as an irrational crowd.. The Moon, plate 41 from Planets and Spheres 1460-1470 Italy. The deck of fifty so-called Tarocchi are not tarots in the modern, fortune-telling sense, nor were they intended as playing cards. No cut-out impressions mounted for play are known, and they lack the suits and numbers of a regular deck. Instead, these delicately engraved didactic allegories are grouped in five numbered ranks describing the workings of the spheres of man, the muses, the liberal arts, the cosmos, and the heavens in order of increasing significance, and offer a didactic sequence to educate courtly youths or possibly university students, who could have used them as flashcards or a pamphlet..
