Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria on Horseback cast 1707 Roger Schabol This bronze equestrian group represents Elector of Bavaria Maximilian II Emanuel (r. 1679-1726) on rearing steed, triumphantly vanquishing a fallen enemy sprawled below. Maximilian likely commissioned the work directly from the artist, Roger Schabol, to commemorate the Electors 1686 military victory over the Ottoman Turks at the Siege of Belgrade. An enigmatic sculptor and founder active at the court of Louis XIV, Schabol signed and dated the work along the front edge of the base. Little is known about the artist, making this superbly cast bronze an invaluable contribution to his oeuvre. Schabol came from Brussels to Paris in the 1680s, where by 1687 he is documented as part of a team of sculptors active on the Parterre dEau at Versailles. Schabol developed expertise casting equestrian monuments working alongside notable sculptors like Francois Girardon and Martin van den Bogaert, known as Desjardins. Schab

Pope Pius VI on Horseback ca. 1784 Antonio and Lorenzo Cialli This equestrian sculpture depicts Pope Pius VI (1717-1799) on horseback, with his arm raised in blessing. The composition of the work recalls the long tradition of Italian public sculpture in which prominent figures were often depicted on horseback in heroic poses. The sculpture is remarkable for its level of detail, as earthenware is a difficult medium in which to execute precise motifs and expressions. It appears that relatively few examples of this portrait of Pius VI were produced, perhaps due to the challenges of sculpting in earthenware.. Pope Pius VI on Horseback. Antonio and Lorenzo Cialli. Small Box 1601-1700 Japan. The proliferation of foreign faces in Edo-era prints has its roots in the appearance of Portuguese and Spanish ìSouthern Barbariansî in Japan in the mid-16th century and Dutch and English ìRed-Hairsî in the early 17th. The ìSouthern Barbarianî figures decorating this box are shown wearing Portuguese fashionsótight-fitting jackets and ballooning trousers festooned with rufflesówhich are depicted within the conventions of Japanese art. Fierce eyes and exaggerated noses complete the ensemble of alien attributes, while the mastiff pictured with the figuresómore comic than threateningóreflects the new large dog breeds introduced to Japan from Europe..
