Auti Te Pape 1893-94 Paul Gauguin French Gauguin began working on the text and illustrations for Noa Noa (Fragrant Scent) while in Paris in 1893-94 following his first voyage to Tahiti. The project was originally conceived as a narrative of Gauguin's personal and artistic perceptions of Tahiti but ultimately became something much more complex and mysterious, full of references to Tahitian creation myths and ancient Maori culture. Gauguin designed ten woodblock prints for Noa Noa, which function less as illustrations than as inspired corollaries: they bear little relationship to his romanticized autobiographical text, nor do they seem to follow any particular sequence. However, the imagery and themes of the prints - love and fear, creation and death, day and night - are in keeping with much of Gauguin's Tahitian oeuvre. Date: 1810-20.In 1809, the prolific Sully traveled to London and entered the teaching studio of Benjamin West (1738-1820), who also introduced him to other significant artists, including Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). In London, Sully developed his enthusiasm for drawing, using it to make preparatory studies for his portraits, record ideas, and copy works by other artists. This sheet belongs to a sketchbook that Sully used after his return to the United States. His many copies after prints by European masters suggest that he was determined to continue his artistic training on his own. Here, the main figures were made after reproductions of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling: Adam from the Creation of Adam (above) and sleeping Adam from the Creation of Eve.
