Textile Fragment with Double-Headed Eagles and Facing Lions 13th century The design on this fragmentary textile consists of two rows of roundels: the upper roundels contain double-headed eagles, and the lower ones, confronted lions. The roundels are situated against a dense vegetal background. Textile Fragment 15th-16th century This object is one of a larger group of textile fragments made in Gujarat, India, but found in Fustat, Egypt (known as Old Cairo.) Dated to either the fifteenth or sixteenth century, it is decorated with patterns which echo the ornamental motifs found in painted Jain manuscripts made during this time. These features can be seen in the fragments repeated checkered patterning on the top and bottom borders, which are filled with crosses and divided into smaller squares with floral medallions. The use of blue for coloring the floral design of the fragment serve as evidence of the use and popularity of indigo dyes in Gujarati textile production during this time. In its complete form, it originally would have also depicted a hunter aiming a large rock at the dragon. The dragon was a popular subject for miniature painters, upon whose illustrations textiles like this one were based. Fragment with an Interlace Medallion and Bands. Dimensions: Ht. 30 11/16 in. (78 cm)W. 26 3/4 in. (68 cm). Date: 3rd-6th century.Two bands with a scroll of heart-shaped leaves and two birds are paired with a large roundel. The medallion encloses a beautiful interlace within an eight-pointed star. Crosses circumscribed by circles fill the spaces between the star and the running wave border. The complex patterning is created using a decorative technique known as the flying shuttle or flying needle. Shuttles are devices in a loom for passing the horizontal (weft) threads through the spaces between the vertical (warp) threads. In this technique, the weaver made additional passes of the shuttle to create lines of ornament that do not follow the regular pattern of the weave.
