Fragment of a Coat. Dimensions: H. 20 1/4 in. (51.4 cm)W. 36 1/2 in. (92.7 cm). Date: early 14th century.The repeated Arabic inscription in thuluth script is translated as "Glory to our master the Sultan al-Malik al-Mu'ayyad." This probably refers to the Rasulid sultan al-Mu'ayyad Da'ud ibn Yusuf (r. 1297-1321), indicating that this is one of the many objects manufactured in Egypt for the Yemeni sultans, either as diplomatic gifts or special commissions. Date: late 16th-17th century.This lively and colorful fragment was once part of a large, tapestry-woven table cover, bed cover, or wall hanging. Its size, proportions, and basic organization may have been similar to the large Peruvian tapestry with figurative scenes in the collection of the Metropolitan (56.163). The composition of the fragment consists of a series of major and minor borders, separated by guard stripes. Throughout, red is the predominant color; this is typical of Andean textiles both before and after the sixteenth-century Spanish invasion, and was probably achieved through the use of dye extracted from cochineal, an indigenous American insect. Off-white, yellow, blue, green, and purple also appear. Textile Fragment from the Tomb of Don Felipe second half 13th century Part of a corpus of identical fragments, this Andalusian textile belonged to the mantle that was interred with Don Felipe Infante (d. 1274), son of Ferdinand II and brother of Alfonso X, thirteenth-century kings of Castile. The composition consists of registers containing repeating rosettes with geometric interlace against a gold background. The most prominent band features a kufic inscription, al-Yumn (felicity), in mirror image. Opulent textiles, probably manufactured in a Muslim production center, were regularly used for garments or furnishings and placed in Christian royal burials, reflecting the esteem with which Andalusian fabrics were regarded.. Date: 4th-6th century.At the center of this finely woven square, a dancing shepherd wearing an animal-skin exomis (a short tunic fastened at the shoulder worn for exercise, riding, or labor) holds in the air what may be a libation vessel used for the ritual pouring of a liquid in honor of gods, heroes, or the dead. He is surrounded by a flock of leaping, horned animals. Two naked, dancing women, possibly nymphs, occupy opposite corners; the remaining corners are filled with plants, perhaps lotus. Pastoral scenes inhabited by figures associated with classical mythology were common on late antique textiles. Along with maenads and satyrs, shepherds and nymphs often made up Dionysos's entourage. Textile Fragment 16th-17th century Produced in Gujarat, India, this fairly small cotton textile fragment would have once been part of a larger decorative textile found in Fustat, Egypt. Boldly decorated, this fragments stylistic motifs of ogival shapes and dots form a pattern of blooming floriated petals and tendril designs. Utilizing both mordant and resist dye techniques, this fragment is a vivid example of the extensive use and popularity of indigo dyes in Gujarati textile design during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This fragment highlights the demand for the vibrantly dyed and decorated Gujarati textiles, their circulation through Indian Ocean trade networks, and their appeal within the context of Egypt.. Date: first half 12th century.This silk fragment belongs to a group of silk brocaded textiles of the Almoravid dynasty found in the reliquary of Saint Librada in the Cathedral of Siquenza in Almeria, Spain. These were possibly taken as booty when the armies of Alfonso VII of Castile (r. 1126-57) sacked Almeria in 1147 A.D. The design is comprised of a single-headed eagle and composite quadrupeds and harpies in the outer band and a leonine quadruped within a roundel on each shoulder. There is a band of pseudo-epigraphy; kufic script that possibly reads "blessing" (barakat) beneath its talons. Outside the roundel, mostly disintegrated, there is an inscription that says: "Blessing from God and victory, support and long-life.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Cope fourth quarter 15th century Italian The large pomegranate and parallel waving branch motifs make this a quintessential example of the opulent metallic and silk velvet textiles of the late 15th century. The scale and richness of the design give the cope a sense of grandeur appropriate for ecclesiastical purposes. The orphrey textile is also made from a classic Italian textile from the 17th century. The shield bears the heraldic device of Castile and Leon, the castle and lion, which had decorated imperial Spanish garments for several centuries. In a sense, they are a solution to the everyday practical problem of carpet wear in a heavily used space (e.g., a doorway), but a solution so signally expensive and labor-intensive that it does not make sense to see their use as a practical measure in reality. Like all Assyrian reliefs, their quarrying, transport, and carving involved difficult and time-consuming work. They would also have been painted, and where real carpet would eventually need replacing, these panels would presumably have needed to be repainted regularly. The Assyrian palaces were filled with fine carpets and hangings, but none survive. With fluctuating moisture levels and often very high salinity, the Mesopotamian soil is not well suited to the preservation of organic materials. Unlike in Egypt, where very stable
