The Angel and the Shepherds (L'ange et les bergers) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Angel and the Shepherds (L'ange et les bergers), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 5 9/16 x 7 9/16 in. (14.1 x 19.2 cm). In Lukes Gospel, the shepherds in the hills and valleys surrounding Bethlehem first learn of the miraculous event from an angel who announces the birth of the Savior. The accompanying angels joyously sing their praise of God and urge good will to men, a passage that gives its name to a well-known hymn, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” (Glory to God in the Highest). In the text he wrote to accompany this image, Tissot explains the local practices for pasturage in the Middle East, noting that small bands of shepherds gathered around campfires and alternated watches to care for their flocks. Attentive to this practical detail, Tissot casts the faces of his shepherds in the orange glow of their warming fire—a striking contrast to the verdant surrounding

It met any traveler/visitor trying to enter the city of Thebes and asked the person to answer a riddle (what walks on four legs when it is young, two in as an adult, and three as an old person - answer - human). Death was the reward for all who failed to answer. Oedipus answered the question, as seen here with the sphinx and the skeltons of those who failed, and was able to enter Thebes. Oedipus was the mythical king of Thebes. But the oracle of Apollo at Delphi had told his father Laius that a son of Laius and his wife Jocasta would kill Laius. When Oedipus was born, Laius had given Oedipus to a servant with orders to abandon the infant. The servant could not In time, Oedipus came back to Thebes, unaware of his true background, and met the sphinx, solved the riddle and entered the city.

Liberty Ca. 1800 Chinese, for American market During the Federal period, Americas growing strength and sense of self inspired countless images celebrating the new nations ideal of liberty, of which this painting, Liberty in the Form of the Goddess of Youth Giving Support to the Bald Eagle, is one example. Reverse painted on glass for the American market, the image is based upon a 1796 engraving of the same title by Edward Savage of Philadelphia. One of several surviving examples of this popular image, the painting depicts the Goddess of Liberty standing, supposedly, on Beacon Hill, with Boston Harbor in the distance, a reference to the recent evacuation of the British fleet from the harbor. As Liberty proffers a cup to the descending eagle, she tramples below her feet both the key to the Bastille, symbolizing the death of the monarchy in France, and the Star of the Order of the Garter of Britain, symbolizing Americas freedom from England..
