Date: 1850.Delacroix envisioned Jacob and the angel entwined and struggling in a small clearing beneath a lush canopy of trees in his interpretation of the Book of Genesis (32: 24-32). The composition assumes the shape of the arched wall in the chapel of the Holy Angels in the church of Saint-Sulpice, Paris, for which it was designed. This is the most developed of the preparatory sketches Delacroix made for the subject in 1850 and was very likely submitted for approval to officials at the Prefecture of the Seine. The Vision of Saint John ca. 1608-14 El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) Greek The painting is a fragment from a large altarpiece commissioned for the church of the hospital of Saint John the Baptist in Toledo. It depicts a passage in the Bible, Revelation (6:9-11) describing the opening of the Fifth Seal at the end of time, and the distribution of white robes to "those who had been slain for the work of God and for the witness they had borne." The missing upper part may have shown the Sacrificial Lamb opening the Fifth Seal. The canvas was an iconic work for twentieth-century artists and Picasso, who knew it in Paris, used it as an inspiration for Les Demoiselles dAvignon.. The Vision of Saint John. The dancelike positions of the three nude women in this fanciful landscape recall the choreography of the famed Isadora Duncan, who had just returned to the United States in 1908 to promote her innovative dance movements, based on a free-form style that she attributed to the ancient Greeks. The painting most likely grew out of Davies' familiarity with Duncan's theory that the essence of dance technique rested in natural breathing paralleling the rhythms of the ocean tides--hence the painting's title. In Davies' hands this subject takes on a curious mixture of spirituality, academicism, and modernity that testifies to the eclecticism of his art. American Art ca. 1908
