The woodblock cutter gave exaggerated attention to duplicating the irregularities of the brush stroke, for instance, the variations in thickness of the calligraphic curves and the feathery quality at the point where the brush left the paper. However, in this translation from painting to the simplicity of the woodblock print, the freely-drawn line of the brush artist became more precise and robust in the physical process of incising hard wood. Additionally, the contrast between the soft, white paper and the heavy black calligraphic lines, the bold graphic patterning, and greater attention to the surface all contributed to a new aesthetic.Kiyomasu represents the vigorous style of the Torii school artist. Date: ca. 1800.This finely rendered drawing sheet has two discreet images, oriented in different directions. The ensemble with Kali seems to have predominated, not only in size but also through the use of color. White has been used to strengthen the image, and most of the ink lines that comprise the image are superimposed over it. It has also been used--for example, in the hair of the goddess and her sword--to make corrections. Color was added as well, moving the drawing further toward a finished work instead of a mere sketch. The first doge served about 700 and the last abdicated in 1797, with the coming of Napoleon. Once elected by the city-state's aristocracy, a doge served until he died. Photo Collage: Man Wearing Blue Top Hat ca. 1875 Juan Pedro Chabalgoity The carte de visite, a format comprised of an approximately 2 x 4 inch photograph mounted to card stock, was perhaps the most ubiquitous of nineteenth-century photographs. The French studio portrait photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri?first patented the carte in 1854. His innovation of exposing not just one but eight photographic images on the same glass plate negative enabled cartes to be made cheaply and reproduced on a mass scale. During the late 1850s and throughout the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes depicting portraits of loved ones, celebrities, monarchs, and foreign types circulated en masse and spurred a veritable "cartomania." Collected in albums, traded among friends, and admired in drawing rooms, cartes put photography in the hands of virtually everyone, and thus offered a means of reflecting upon one’s own social standing in an ever-expanding world.. Studio Portrait: Man Holding Decorative Stick with Italian Flag, Naples 1860s-70s Giorgio Conrad The carte de visite, composed of a print of approximately 2 x 4 inches mounted to card stock, is perhaps the most ubiquitous form of nineteenth-century photography. From the late 1850s through the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes circulated en masse and spurred a veritable “cartomania.” This is an example of those distributed by the commercial photography studios of Conrad in Naples and Ponti in Venice, depicting occupational “types” related to those cities, such as a hooded member of a religious confraternity, a masked Pulcinella (a stock theater character), a musician, a water carrier, and an oyster shucker, among others. While these stereotypical images charmed tourists interested in foreign customs, they also appealed to a growing clientele of middle-class Italians as a means of reflecting on their own social standing.. Five Javanese Court Officials.The axiom clothes make the man’ also held true in Indonesia. These are not actual portraits, but types’. The accurately rendered garments and batik motifs indicate not only the region from which these men came, they also provide information about their rank and status. These resolute, confident figures are exceptional and were probably painted by a non-Western artist. In European depictions, Indonesians were usually depicted as adversaries, colonial subjects or innocent’ primitives.

Dutchman with a Servant early 19th century Attributed to Kawahara Keiga This is painting was inspired by an early print of the 1750s entitled Hollander” (Orandajin no zu) that was produced by the publisher Hariya in Nagasaki, the only port foreigners were allowed to enter Japan for most of the Edo period. That print, which became a template for countless subsequent prints and paintings of Dutch figures, identifies the dandily dressed figure with bright blue eyes and long, curly blond hair as the kapitan, referring to the opperhoofd, the manager of the Dutch factory on the island of Deshima (off the shore of Nagasaki). He puffs on a long clay pipe, reminding us that tobacco and its consumption was an insidious import from Europe in the mid to late sixteenth century, and then was grown locally.
