Date: 19th century.This drawing of a gown covering the knee of a lightly sketched woman comes from a group of eleven sheets by an unidentified, academically trained artist--academic practice generally separates nude figure study from drapery during the preparation of compositions. Once attributed to Frederic Lord Leighton, the works are now given to another hand--and were donated to the Museum by Albert Eugene Gallatin. As an influential New York collector and critic in the first decades of the twentieth century, Gallatin promoted "Art for Art's Sake," and insisted that aesthetics, rather than narrative or moral concerns, underpins enduring art.
