Seated Girl 1820-40 George Jones British The draftsman of this sketch was one of Britain's most successful battle painters in the decade following Napoleon's 1815 defeat. Jones had entered the Royal Academy Schools at fifteen, then exhibited literary and religious subjects, views and portraits before joining the army in 1808. He fought as a captain in the Montgomery militia during the Peninsular War, then made good use of that experience to devise military images for an interested public--he also became an expert on the Battle of Waterloo (where he did not fight)and won a prize in 1820 for a painting commemorating Wellington's most famous victory, now at the Royal Military Hospital, Chelsea.. Study of a Young Girl Sir Godfrey Kneller German 1690-1710 Born in Lübeck, Kneller went to Holland to pursue a military career and there decided to instead become an artist. After training in Amsterdam, he travelled to Italy and reached England around 1676, intending to study works by Sir Antony Van Dyck. The recent death of Sir Peter Lely opened a path to success as a portrait painter and, by 1680, Kneller had been appointed court artist to Charles II. He held that position under successive monarchs into the 1620s while operating a successful London portrait studio. Most of his surviving drawings remain in Britain and this study of a young girl is charmingly informal when compared to life-sized chalk studies of heads that the artist made in preparation for paintings. The features convey a lively personality, enhanced by the loosely piled hair and bunches of ribbons affixed to shoulder and bodice. View more. Study of a Young Girl. The Head of a Woman Looking Up (Judith) 1625-26 Guido Reni Italian Striking for its coloristic richness-a pictorial quality imparted by the combination of red and black chalk-this head of a young woman is a preparatory study for Reni's painting Judith and Holofernes, a celebrated and much replicated composition. The present study was most probably derived from life, to judge from the bold immediacy of the contours and the quick zig-zagging of the parallel hatching of the shading. The elegiac beauty of the young female model that is seen here would be idealized by the artist into a more athletic, heroic type in the painted composition. In the drawing, which exhibits theexquisite "two-chalk" technique is typical of Guido's work of the mid 1620s, the upturned head of the figure exhibits gentler facial features and a softer modeling of the flesh in the area of the neck. The Museum owns a further preparatory drawing for the same painting (62.123.1), a study formerly collected by the Italian
