Tennyson's The Grandmother's Apology - Girl Seated on Floor, 1859. Artist: John Everett Millais. This drawing of a young girl is a study that was later used in Millais' preparatory design for Tennyson's 'The Grandmother's Apology', also in Birmingham's collection (1906P574). The poem, along with the final wood-engraving by the Dalziel Brothers, was published in the periodical 'Once a Week' on 16th July, 1859.

The interior, restored in 1776 and 1827, is neoclassical. Views in prints H-6 and H-9 show a small barrel-vaulted chapel with a modern main altar painting of the Last Supper. This is either the oratory or a misidentifed church interior. Portrait of Madame Rhode (Rhoda). Artist: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, Montauban 1780-1867 Paris). Dimensions: 8 1/8 x 6 5/8 in. (20.6 x 16.9 cm). Date: 1810-20.Unlike other presentation portraits by Ingres in this gallery, this one appears unfinished. Even its signature, Ing, is incomplete, and the inscription is only partially legible. The ethereal figure may have been a British subject who posed for Ingres in Rome in the early nineteenth century. Her exotic headdress and Empire clothing and jewelry accord with such a date. The drawing remained in the artist's studio at his death, further supporting its presumed role as a study. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
