Gretchen in Prayer before a Statue of the Mater Dolorosa (recto); Studies of a Woman and Man's Head (verso) 1828-31 Theodor Richard Edward von Holst Romantic literary and fantastic subjects predominate in Von Holsts oeuvre, derived from authors such as Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, and Victor Hugo. He turned most often to Goethes Faust, and the present image shows Gretchen praying to a figure of the Madonna.Von Holsts precocious talent was recognized by Thomas Lawrence, who bought a drawing from the youth when the latter was ten years old. After taking lessons from Henry Fuseli, Von Holst entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of fourteen in 1824. Fuseli remained a strong influence stylistically and the works of the two artists have often been confused. In 1959, an album assembled by John Welch Etherington Rolls (1807-1870) appeared at auction containing drawings by both artists, and subsequent research allowed a core group to be securely ascribed to Von Holst, the present sheet

A Bearded Prophet in Glory Attended by a Bishop, Two Other Male Saints, and Angels (Design for a Section of a Dome) 1634-35 Giovanni Lanfranco Italian Rapidly drawn on a page taken from a sketchbook, this dynamic, highly utilitarian working drawing portrays a figural scene of religious glory, conceived in a perspective "as if seen from below" and within the outlines framing a tall, pointed, curving area between two ribs of a dome. The prominent, semi-nude bearded male saint at center is accompanied by three other male saints more schematically articulated on the right, seated amidst clouds, and supported by a number of quickly outlined flying angels. The sketch was produced by Giovanni Lanfranco for his famous, though ill-fated frescoes on the dome of the church of the Gesù Nuovo, Naples, painted in 1634-35, and highly praised by Lanfranco's early biographers, but which were burnt in 1639, and finally destroyed in the earthquake of 1688. The verso represents the very abbreviated sketch

Standing and Kneeling Figures, and Studies of Flying Putti. Artist: Francesco Curia (Italian, documented Naples 1565/70-1608 Naples). Dimensions: 7 5/8 x 11 1/4in. (19.3 x 28.5cm). Date: 1565-1608.Francesco Curia can be rightly considered the most relevant artist active in Southern Italy during the Sixteenth century. The present sheet is one of eight pen sketches (Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. nos.1970.101.4-11) figured in an album containing "97 pezzi di Francesco Curia" (97 pieces by Francesco Curia:) once in the collection of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (1654-1728), and then inherited by his son Carl Gustav Tessin (1695-1770), the greatest Swedish collector of drawings of the Eighteenth century. It seems to have been broken up in the latter's lifetime. Eighty-two of these sheets are now in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm; those in the Metropolitan Museum came to New York by way of a Swedish collector who acquired them from a collateral descendant of Tessin. (14.4 x 21.9 x 1 cm). This forty-two-page sketchbook contains drawings by the history painter Peter Frederick Rothermel of scenes in Genazzano, Italy, forty miles east of Rome. He documented the local architecture, sculpture, landscape, and people, while also including sketches for narrative subjects.
