Dust Blows On The Tail Of The Tornadoes -- While Tornadoes ripped their way from Oklahoma and Kansas to Illinois, black clouds of dust mistaken for tornado clouds by many, swept over Wichita, Kas., Blotting out the sun, as shown above. Galveston, Texas, after construction of the 17-foot seawall to protect against hurricanes. With dredged sand, the city raised its high ground to 17 feet above sea level from a previous 8.7 feet. These protections were effective when tested by a 1915 hurricane with a 12-foot storm surge, but could not prevent the rise of Houston as the region's dominant port (BSLOC_2017_17_91)
