The central vase contains sweet flag, a long-bladed grass with an aroma so strong it was deemed capable of warding off any poisonous insects and evil forces emerging with the warmer spring temperatures. The figure to the right, holding a sword, is Zhong Kui, a deity who exorcises ghosts and evil spirits. His image is often painted on household gates as a guardian spirit, and in businesses dealing in high-value goods.

Pieces from a Robe (Kosode) with Autumn Grasses first half of the 18th century Japan These textiles have a lighthearted pattern of various autumn grasses, including Chinese bellflowers (kiky), bush clover (hagi), and miscanthus grass (susuki) on a background of large triangular shapes. The pieces were once part of a robe (kosode).The textiles share the simplified, somewhat flattened style consistent with designs called "Krin patterns" (Krin moy) after the great Rinpa artist Ogata Krin (1658-1715). Beginning in the 1710s, kosode pattern books often labeled designs "krin," though they used homophonic characters for the syllable "-rin" rather than the actual character of the artist’s name. One such reference occurs in a book of 1716, Hiinagata kiku no i (Pattern Book: Chrysanthemum Well). Design for a Chair Seat Cover ca. 1850-70 Anonymous, French, 19th century French This small drawing shows a design for a seat cover in the Louis XVI style of artist such as Pierre Ranson (French, Paris 1736-1786 Paris). He was specialized in making designs for textiles, from tapestries to wall covering silks and other examples of upholstery, all decorated in the more delicate style that emerged during the neoclassical period which was characterized by thin bundles and garlands of flowers, trophies with pastoral attributes and pastel colors. As is shown by this design, fifty years later, the style would come in vogue again albeit just one of many. The scale of this design is clearly not true to life and it is not unlikely that this drawing was made for a sample book of an upholsterer, to be shown to the customer as one of many different styles to choose from.. Valentine 1879 Anonymous This is a tiny folded, cameo-embossed card made of heavy paper, and unsigned. The embossed paper has a raised, cameo design of swirls and roses, rising above a pale gray background color. Applied to the front is a chromolithographed, moveable, die-cut scrap the same height as the card. It features a bouquet of flowers, with an angel emptying a cornucopia of rose petals, above two doves. Moving it downward reveals an image of a gold ring with ruby center, and within that area, the words, "In fond remembrance". Inside, is inserted a piece of paper, brightly chromolithographed in a colorful gothic pattern of red, yellow, pink, green, and purple. The white center is printed with a romantic verse.. Valentine.
