Loom Width with Serrated Leaf Design ca. 1600-1625 This lampas-woven fragment features large-scale leaves executed in the saz style, named after the feathery saz leaf. Popularized throughout Ottoman arts by the Iranian émigré and court painter, Shah Qulu, during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent (1520-66), the saz style found its way from the reed pen of the painters at the royal nakkaşhane (workshop) into contemporary textile design. In this case, this new artistic aesthetic is characterized by central motifs with serrated edges outlined in a contrasting color. The lampas (kemha) weaving technique incorporates contrasting weave structures with two warps in different colors, creating solid areas of color on the surface of the cloth by floating the unincorporated warp threads in the back.. Panel for a skirt or petticoat 1690-1710 British In 1688 John Stalker and George Parker published A Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing, a book which included twenty-four designs for decorating furniture and accessories in imitation of Asian lacquer. These designs were also transferred to other techniques and the motifs on this embroidered panel are similar to some of Stalker and Parkers patterns. See also MMA 26.189.2. Of probable Spanish origin, Triumfa España en las Americas depicts "America" as a Native American female upon a litter supported by two young men among stylized flora. Europeans began personifying the Americas as an exotic native woman in the sixteenth century, but the inclusion of the legend "Triumfa Espana en las Americas" suggests that the designs authors were attempting to communicate something more explicit than the portrayal of the colonial Americas as a noble (but still inferior) savage. Textile Panel first half 17th century This piece was probably used as a furnishing fabric. The flower forms reflect the saz (black pen) style that originated with black ink drawings and became particularly popular in the arts of Turkey and Iran in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Hallmarks of the saz style appearing in this work include large blossoms pointing alternately to the left and right, which seem to consist of several separate flower heads emerging in succession. Bedcover early 18th century Indian, Gujarat for British market During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Gujarat, in western India, supplied embroideries of the highest quality to the Mughal court; these textiles became valued commodities in Europe as soon as sea trade with that region was established. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to enter this market, but most surviving Gujarati embroideries relate to trade with England, which increased in the early seventeenth century.¹ Over the course of the seventeenth century, as the Gujarati embroiderers adjusted their output for the English market, they adopted the common motif of pink flowers detailed in yellow that bloom from dark green vines with light green or yellow veins. In the background are spotted leopards, striped deer, squirrels, birds, and other chain-stitched beasts filled with bands of color or details in contrasting hues.
