Tool 5th-3rd millennium B.C. () Iran This bone tool, possibly an awl, was excavated in 1937 at a prehistoric site in the vicinity of Nishapur in northeastern Iran. While Nishapur itself was founded by the Sasanian king Shapur I (reigned ca. A.D. 241-272), this tool shows that human habitation there goes back to the prehistoric period. Furthermore, the prehistoric pottery from Nishapur has close affinities with ceramic materials from Central Asia rather than with contemporary sites in Iran, meaning that in this period its inhabitants were likely culturally linked to their neighbors to the east. At the same time, Nishapur’s location on what later became known as the Great Khorasan Road suggests that it was part of the trade network that facilitated the import of precious stones such as lapis lazuli, carnelian and turquoise from Central Asia to Mesopotamia.. This image of Perseverance's backshell (left of center), supersonic parachute (far right), was collected from an altitude of 26 feet (8 meters) by NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during its 26th flight on Mars on April 19, 2022. During the Feb. 18, 2021, landing of Perseverance, the parachute and backshell were jettisoned at about 1.3 miles (2.1 km) altitude. The parachute and backshell continued to descend and impacted the ground at approximately 78 mph (126 kph). Engineers working on the Mars Sample Return program requested images be taken from an aerial perspective of the components because they may provide insight into the components' performance during the rover's entry, descent, and landing. The image has been cropped and processed from the original version.

The floor of Candor Chasma includes a variety of landforms, including layered deposits, dunes, landslide deposits and steep sided cliffs and mesas. Many forms of erosion have shaped Candor Chasma. Sunlight reflected from small particles shows the firefly phenomenon which was reported by astronaut John H. Inside the Space Station Processing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, red romaine lettuce seeds are affixed to seed film - a new seed handling material - on Jan. 15, 2020. The seed film is being prepared for the VEG-03 J experiment that will fly to the International Space Station on Northrop Grummans 13th resupply services (NG-13) mission. This seed film experiment involves crew aboard the orbiting laboratory planting the seeds into plant pillows - a common method used to grow plants in space - themselves for the first time ever. The water-soluble, dissolving film addresses the challenge of handling seeds in a microgravity environment and also can be used to deliver fertilizers and other beneficial substances that help plants grow. NG-13 is scheduled to launch from the agencys Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Feb. 9, 2020, at 5:39 p.m. EST.

Bioprinting allows three dimensional tissue production in a fast and controlled manner by the precise positioning of primary cells, biomaterials and growth factors. Thereby, bioprinted tissues simulate the complex in vivo situation of our body. Tissues are produced in a layer by layer mode by alternating photopolymerized bioink and cells. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The top of NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander can be seen inside the mobile service tower of Launch Pad 17-A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Launch of Phoenix on the Delta II launch vehicle is scheduled for no earlier than Aug. 3. Phoenix will land in icy soils near the north polar permanent ice cap of Mars and explore the history of the water in these soils and any associated rocks, while monitoring polar climate. Landing on Mars is planned in May 2008 on arctic ground where a mission currently in orbit, Mars Odyssey, detected high concentrations of ice just beneath the top layer of soil. NASA/George Shelton

The crack in the crawler-transporter cleat that stalled rollout of Space Shuttle Endeavour can be seen as a white dotted line on the top-center and running down the side. The cleat rests on the ground near Launch Pad 39B. The cracked cleat forced the reverse of the rollout back outside the pad gate so the cleat could be repaired on flat ground before moving up the incline to the top of the pad.
