This report consists of two photographs and a small report documenting the commercial fishing vessel P. H. I., belonging to Yaswiro Naito, alien Japanese. The vessel was inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard on October 14, 1941.

Coast Guard Invasion Barge Hits the Saipan Beach. Invaders pile out of a Coast Guard-manned landing barge into the surf that washes the beaches of Saipan. Jap bastion in the Marianas until it fell before an irresistible Yankee offensive. Signs in the background are posted to guide the barges to their assigned spot for debarkation.

One of the Black Gang Repeats an Order Over the Speaking Tube to the Bridge. "Full Speed It Is, Sir." From the engine room of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter somewhere along the North Atlantic ship lanes, one of the black gang repeats an order over the speaking tube to the bridge. These men stick to their posts below decks unaware of the course of battle as the cutters protect convoys of merchant ships to Allied ports in Europe.

The "Old 18" Does it Again. Veteran of several amphibious invasions along the long road from the Solomons to the Philippines, the Coast Guard-manned LST 18 unloads its fighting men and machines on the beaches of Leyte Island. Another Coast Guard-manned LST, the 202, also rings up another invasion. On the beach Coast Guardsmen and troops are filling sandbags for beach gun emplacements.

"Water Buffalo" Line Up for Invasion of Cape Sansapor. At an American base in the South Pacific, a line of amphibious tanks (called water buffalo) awaits the order to roll into the belly of a Coast Guard-manned LST for the invasion of Cape Sansapor at the western end of Dutch New Guinea. In silhouette, Coast Guardsman Robert Campbell, coxswain, of Los Angeles, Calif., stands guard. The capture of Cape Sansapor completed the American jump-by-jump sweep along the northern New Guinea coast, which earlier knocked the Japs out at Hollandia, Wakde, and Biak.

Dating Miss Springfield. "Dating Miss Springfield", these cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Connecticut, are being instructed in handling of the standard Springfield rifle. The future officers are trained in use of all types of weapons as well as seamanship, that they may better carry out the military duties of the Coast Guard, which had recently added the names of Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Fedala to its traditions.

Canned Water for Men on the Water. A U.S. Coast Guardsman examines a can of water intended for the use of survivors of doomed ships. This is one feature of a new plan for packaging and stowing of food and water that has just been approved by the Coast Guard Merchant Marine Inspection division in its efforts to improve the lot of seamen in distress. The new Coast Guard regulations a call for individual can of water and food for survivors and provides a method of stowing them that will take less space in lifeboats or life rafts. The individual cans will facilitate rationing by the senior survivor in the boat or raft. The Coast Guard is constantly searching for ways to increase the safety and comfort of merchant seamen on the convoy routes.

Native Peasants on Ie Shima Come Over to Americans. Out of the thickets on Ie Shima comes a family of Jap peasants to beg food and medicine from veterans of the American 10th Army. A Coast Guard combat photographer came upon these first civilians to come through the American lines in the assault upon the strategic isle of Ie, close by the coast of Okinawa.
