Irrigation Works-Cyprus -- Nearly complete. Workmen putting the finishing touches to the ditch when it approaches the weir after winding its way round the bottom of the Galini hillls.Because of the physical features of the country it is necessary to irrigate all land used for cultivation in Cyprus. Tanks are built all over the lowlands, some of then dating back to the Turkish occupation. These tanks are filled by the summer rains in the hills and the water carried by conduits and used for winter irrigation.A new canal is being built at Galini and when it is finished it will make over 1,000 denumes or 340 acres of barren land fit for cultivation.The construction will cost the Cyprus Government £12,000 and is expected to produce a net profit of £1,000 a year. The Coal Gleaners Of Ilford -- Mrs, May Stocker and John Grant, both of Ilford, hard at work on the sports field today. Grant is using an old tin hat to break up the frozen ground.Coal gleaners of Newbury Park, Ilford, are solving their own fuel shortage. With pickaxes, garden rakes, iron rods and shovels, they are digging their way through the frozen sports field at the back of Newbury Park School, beneath which is layer of coal, buried since a bomb struck a dump during the war. Japanese Prisoners At Work In Singapore Docks - This Japanese wears a white glove to shovel coal.Since the Allied occupation of Singapore, Japanese soldiers have been put to work in and around the city. They are usually guarded by Indian troops who keep them working and also prevent the civil population getting too near. October 01, 1945.
