The Public Viewing Davids "Coronation" at the Louvre 1810 Louis Léopold Boilly French Davids gigantic painting of Napoleon crowning his wife as Empress Josephine was shown on three occasions at the Musée du Louvre between 1808 and 1810. These public spectacles were highly political, celebratory endorsements of Napoleons audacious claim to power in 1804. As represented by Boilly, visitors to the Louvre could decipher all the key actors in Davids vast composition by consulting printed guidebooks, such as the one held by the military man at left. Hats are being removed, either in deference to the imperial couple or for better visibility; children make up a significant proportion of the crowd, perhaps in reference to the future of France. The French Comedians ca. 1720 Antoine Watteau French The costumes and repertoire of French comedians was distinct from Watteaus favored Italian commedia dellarte. This paintings principal male figure is dressed in an old-fashioned, formal costume that in the eighteenth century would have been appropriate for a subject from antiquity. Typical of Watteau, however, the scene is entirely imaginary and does not align with any known opera or play. The entrance from backstage of Crispin, a character from the commedia dellarte, underscores the improbability of the scene. Infrared reflectography shows a preparatory underdrawing on the canvas, probably by a specialist architecture painter, a practice Watteau often employed to create such stagelike spaces.
