Streichmelodeon German late 19th century The streichmelodeon is a bowed stringed instrument related to a streich zither (see Met number 89.4.998). It was invented by Leopold Breit of Brno in 1856 and became popular throughout Moravia, Germany, and Austria. The instrument is held in the lap or placed on a table, with the lower portion of the instrument positioned so that it is free to bow between the bridge and fingerboard. The strings are tuned to traditional alpine zither tuning, the reverse of the traditional violin. Description: roughly violin-shaped, four strings, twenty-seven raised nickel-silver frets of which three are partial, machine head tuners, two f-holes, three spiked ivory feet (two on back of body, one on the back of the headstock), eight mother-of-pearl inlaid position markers in the ebony fingerboard. Seven String Bass Viol 1720 Nicolas Bertrand French This viol was brought from France to Quebec City in Canada in the middle of the eighteenth century. It was at a boarding school for wealthy girls run at the Convent of the Hospital General along with other instruments, perhaps to accompany a choir. At some point, perhaps in 1759 during the Battle of Quebec, all of the instruments along with other items were hidden behind a hastily constructed wall in the convent. The instruments remained there until the 1830s when masons discovered them when they were brought in to make repairs to the convent. This instrument by Bertrand was later sold in 1864 to a dealer in Montreal, William Snaith. He in turn sold it to Mary Elizabeth Brown in 1899. This viol retains its original neck, which was reshaped when the viol was converted to a cello, probably in the nineteenth century. Bass viols of French origin feature seven strings, an invention of the French viol player Jean de Sainte-Colombe (fl. 1658

Violin 1893 American August Gemünder was the eldest son of Johann Georg Gemünder, violin maker to Prince Hohenlohe in Inglefinger in the west part of Germany. August and his younger brother George worked for their father learning the trade of violin making, while their younger brother Albert apprenticed to an organ builder. After their father died in 1835, August inherited the workshop and moved it to Regensburg. His brother George worked in several German shops before moving to Paris where he worked for Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, the most celebrated violin maker in Europe at the time. In 1846, August and Albert moved to the United States and established themselves as piano and organ builders in Springfield, Massachusetts. They eventually convinced George to join them in the United States. After his violins won a prize at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London, George Gemünder had a tremendous reputation.
